How can your digital strategy framework create a culture of learning and transformation?

This is all well and good. However, one big caveat. It has been proven time and again that digital transformation will *not* be successful unless you have a digi-savvy and enthused employee culture to start with. So, yes, a successful transformation project will indeed reinforce your culture and make it even more digi-savvy and enthused. But without this caveat, I regret that this article has things backwards, in my humble opinion.

Ask yourself how digitally occurring changes are affecting your industry. What are some of the new business models, operating models, and offerings it is enabling? Most importantly, determine what new rivals it is empowering.

A digital strategy is as much about what you don’t prioritise as what you do. It crystallizes the difference between what ultimately has the most significant or critical impact on your business and what is a nice to know. Secondly it can ahead of time highlight knowledge & skill gaps across the organisation which you can move to address before they become an anchor on your business.

Digital transformation starts at the top and must be a goal that is aligned to all areas of the business. I've seen time and time again that the only successful way a company can shift to a digital-first culture is by having executive-level buy in. It's first important to determine what the goals are for the different parts of the business, how these ladder up to a shared objective, and how this objective can be achieved more efficiently or effectively by digital tools or processes. By having early and upfront alignment on the overall vision, teams across the organization will be able to move faster and encounter less roadblocks to implementation. Having a clear KPI and measurement strategy for this goal is critical to garnering alignment

In order to assess your current organizations digital maturity, I'd recommend conducting a combination of a GAP analysis and SWOT analysis to understand the areas that require digital acceleration. Understanding first, where there are gaps where digital processes/tools would improve work outputs is critical. However, equally as important is understanding the digital capabilities of the teams that are signed up to be part of this digital transformation journey. It's integral that employee up-skilling takes place as one of the key blockers to progress is a lack of skills in implementation and understanding.

You can also use the Gap Analysis as a tool: What are the gaps in your organization, its systems, and capabilities based on your defined criteria for a victory?

Before embarking on the digital transformation journey 🚀, take a comprehensive stock of your current situation 📊. Dive deep into your existing processes, tools, and employee skillsets 🧐. Recognize the gaps, inefficiencies, and bottlenecks that could hinder your transformation goals. This assessment isn’t just about identifying shortcomings; it's about acknowledging strengths 💪, weaknesses and areas of threat and potential growth (SWOT). By understanding where you currently stand, you'll have a clearer roadmap 🗺️ to guide your transformation, ensuring every step taken aligns with the broader vision of fostering a learning-centric culture.

This is a reality check. Needs to be done with maturity and honesty. Tells us where we are with respect to others in the industry our company is in. But as a corollary, I’d suggest this reality check extend beyond the immediate category, competitors and geography-and look wider for a broader benchmarking.

Which digital opportunities are consistent with your business strategy based on your value potential? 4) Prioritization. And in what order, should you be perusing them? Adapt a portfolio approach to transformational initiatives to secure positive spill-over effects between individual projects.

Each initiative should be rooted in a deeper understanding of your target audience 👥. e.g. use customer personas to craft impactful user journeys that align with their expectations. While choosing digital channels and platforms, ensure they resonate with your audience. Remember that it's not just about messaging; it's about dialogue 💬. Encourage feedback and adapt. Allocate budget judiciously, prioritizing high-impact projects that fuel the culture of learning and transformation 🔄. Lastly, ensure your management tools and processes are agile, fostering collaboration and a unified vision across all teams.

Digital rigidity is the sure sign of imminent decay and death 2. Continual codification - ensuring that the learning from each experiment is codified for the future. Repeating a digital failure without any learned improvements is sacrilegious. 3. Continual sharing - ensuring outcomes are shared copiously. Digital ideation gets magnified when outputs of one inspires another. In sum, any digital strategy must include this positive virtuous cycle of experimentation, codification and sharing to ensure that it creates a culture of learning and transformation.

Build a team war-room that focuses on learning from mistakes as soon as they occur. Embrace them as the valuable opportunities they are and get excited about how to go again next time applying the lessons.
