Firstly what is privacy- Are we at an organization level across all employees not just aware & sensitized to it but also are clear at the same page as a CEO & the front rank executive that data privacy is to be respected & complied.. What is data & have we classified it by criticality? Where it originates & moves - Frequency & Recipients & possibility of leakage at various touch points to be identified & necessary proactive preventive steps taken to protect the same There being a legal repercussion involved in data leakage, confidentiality & secrecy needs to be maintained. User access needs to be defined & then reviewed & evaluated

I think the answer to this question may depend on location and also possibly industry. Having worked in the financial industry in Japan for nearly 3 decades, where there are both strong personal data privacy rules and a regulator that goes to great lengths to ensure that businesses it regulates stick to a stricter interpretation of the regulations, means that people working in that industry receive lots of training and regular reminder training to ensure compliance, with penalties up to dismissal for failure to comply and the business being liable to penalty. Outside the financial sector it is also quite natural to take precautions to protect personal data..it has become part of the culture...

Data should be categorised in different categories such as public data, confidential data & highly confidential data etc. By securing customer's data & ensuring right to privacy always lead to success.

Staff engagement is key. Involving staff in the decisions, making them feel part of the process and ensuring that risks are clearly understood by everyone is key to achieving data security. If staff are not on board then success just won’t happen. Rather than telling staff what is happening it’s important to actually lay out and explain the decision making process so that all staff understand the business risks and the needs of the company, to protect not only itself but also the staff themselves.

I’ve noted that education as a tool to improve culture is continuous. The need for trainings and awareness cannot be over emphasized. Using infographics showing clear steps required of the workforce to achieve the objective is also a great way to go. There should also be a tool or platform that can allow staff to ask questions or share thoughts on grey areas or improvements. I once experienced a similar situation where weekly quizzes were rolled out with gift prizes, and this increased staff interest and participation in building that part of the culture.

In my experience, I’ve found it crucial to have policies that are people centric. People need to be able to understand and easily adhere to policies.
