How do you assess the readiness and motivation of your followers in different situations?

I ask my clients and students to evaluate their readiness in terms of mental readiness and material preparedness. Often times, we feel ready to make a change, and our excitement causes us to overlook the fact that we aren’t prepared. So readiness and preparedness are two totally different things.

Posture and attitude inform my perception of whether or not my followers are ready for change or progress. I look for certain types of language, energy, and comfort when change is coming. Organizations I’ve led where the process is embraced more than the outcomes tend to sustain change better than their alternatives. My reasoning is that organization well acclimated to the process of change embrace the positive aspects growth more than the negative aspects of it. Reading posture and attitude help me to know where the team is and how I can change approach to foster more appropriate mentalities.

In my experience assessing the readiness and motivation of followers can some times be a complex task that requires a nuanced understanding of human behavior and psychology. As a leader, one must be able to identify and interpret a range of cues that can provide insight into the state of mind of one's followers. Motivation is not a fixed attribute, and fluctuates depending on the situation and the individual, thus, it is crucial to maintain open lines of communication. I have found that simply taking the time to have a one on one has proven best. They may not reveal much verbally but there is a lot to be said for non verbal communication. Leaders need to be able to recognize the differences. Motivation does at always necessitate reaction.

From my perspective, assessing the readiness and motivation of followers in different situations requires a keen understanding of their individual needs. I believe that employing the situational leadership theory can be highly effective in determining the appropriate leadership style. By using a directing approach for those who lack readiness and motivation, coaching for those with high motivation but low readiness, supporting for those with high readiness but low motivation, and delegating for those with both high readiness and motivation, leaders can tailor their approach to empower and guide their followers towards success.

By identifying the task, evaluating the followers' confidence and competence, gauging their interest and enthusiasm, providing appropriate direction and support, involving them in the process and feedback, monitoring performance and results, and being open to modifying your leadership style when necessary, you can effectively adapt your approach. This proactive and adaptive strategy will not only empower your followers but also drive optimal outcomes for the organization.
