Phlebotomists build their skillset over time, each patient presenting a new learning experience. For example, individuals with cold extremities, usually need a warm blanket wrapped around their arm or hand to raise the veins to the surface making it easier to find the right spot and only poke the patient once. If the "usual" spots aren't available for blood draw, think outside the box. It's not as ideal, but the feet can be a great place to find veins that haven't been poked a million times before. As a phlebotomist, creativity and basic common sense can make a world of difference for the patient and their experience with blood draws. Learning from each encounter, allows a great Phlebotomist to become an excellent one.
