How to be exceptional. If we are in this field, generally we could sit in a room and code all day, this is considered fun for us. Maybe we like math, maybe we like math a little too much?! These traits usually make us fall in the ‘wallflower’ category, where socializing is a little unnatural. If this is you, then have solace in knowing that you’re not alone. Like my colleagues mentioned, the earlier categories are extremely important. Something that will set you apart from the crowd is being able to translate ‘the geek’ into layman’s terms. How do you explain what you’re working on to an executive in 30 seconds? We love our tech stacks and acronyms, but being able to relay that language, so everyone understands, is exceptional.

Others may be computer scientists etc who understand (say) likelihood as a means of selecting a loss function for an algorithm to minimise, but not the theory why. Recognise they can be both innovators and interlopers, and learn where they’re the expert and when you’re the expert.
