As many have said, you need to develop a good understanding of software, how to write it, how to test it and how to document it. But once you understand this at the conceptual level you are still a software engineer. To become a software systems engineer you need to associate with and begin to understand the other disciplines. If you can converse with electrical, mechanical, safety and all of the other engineering disciplines in a manner that moves you into an inclusive part of their design efforts you will find the interaction to be of immense use. Understanding the system as a system improves your quality as a software systems engineer.

I will keep it very simple. Knowledge is which you know by studying at school/college/University. It can be from anywhere whereas skill is when you implement them and fail in it and try again and then master it. Knowing the subject is different and implementing it is different. If you read the subjects you will know about functionality but when you know implement/practice it you will get to know about errors and you will find methods to solve it. This is called skill. Skill can't be possible without knowledge.

Well for programming college degree is not necessary but if you have a degree then you can enjoy much more privilege. Try to learn and skill yourself during college time as its the best time to learn.

Aside from a college degree in Computer Science certifications really don't mean anything. It's more about experience at that point. Being able to understand, implement, and communicate the concepts is what matters the most. A degree says you know what you should do, but if you can do it, do it in the manner expected.

Despite being a domain expert, having an end-to-end understanding of the system and solutions it provides is essential to becoming a system development expert. Gradual development and expanding knowledge through experience will be the strength.

Apart of broad knowledge of programming languages, both high and low level, I was always keen on automation tasks. Especially documentation automation. I remember when doxygen had become popular, I was supplying every API with doxygen comments. Later on, when regulatory requirements made requirements management ubiquitous, I mastered Doors and documented it's huge tables into user friendly HTML outputs. Finally, with Uml and SysMl, I used opportunity to visually manage requirements and link them to code. This is my way of becoming system architect.

Absolutely try to build your network. There is always someone better than you in a specific field. They blog or post to online communities. Being able to ask them questions can make you better. As for your team, share info with them, and inviting them to review your work can uncover additional information that you didn't consider. They may have information that you never considered, things that happened before you started, advice on how to deal with certain people, etc. Your team has a collective knowledge platform that was built before you, so take advantage of it.

The more you advance in your field the more responsibilities you may take on. Make sure you are ready to take on that responsibility. The bigger the projects get, the harder it will be to fulfill them. As an Architect, designing, deploying, and supporting infrastructure is a big deal at the data center level, so I will say make sure you are ready, you understand all the details/requirements that go into a project and build on that. You start with small projects, and if you're successful, the projects get bigger and bigger. If you understand all the parts, then it will just be another project, but on a bigger scale.

One of the hardest issues to face is change management. The management needed, is very often for the stakeholders more than the technology. Good teams can produce the technology needed, but stakeholders often fight changes, particularly if the changes affect the way they work or do their jobs. Change can be scary, but engaging stakeholders early, getting their inputs, setting them up as a part of the solution pays real dividends. Proper stakeholder management will produce far greater client satisfaction than unseen internal code elegance. The beauty is you can still produce the elegant code, but when the stakeholders feel they were a part of that solution, their sense of perceived quality is greatly enhanced.

I would like to share my personal story. I started as EE working on Capital Equipment for Semiconductor Industry with mechanical engineers concentrating on nanometer scale positioning accuracy laser systems. With the educational background in laser optics I learned about elements of the system pretty fast and we proceeded with co-development providing feedback to each other and improving on the fly. Then the HW got to a good state and SW becomes the bottleneck and I switched to coding in C for Sun/Solaris and then to VxWorks. After a few years I became a liaison between teams, and then a System Engineer responsible for overall technical coordination. So, curiosity in wider technical area, initiative and hard work did the trick.

One of the best ways of becoming the Best of the Best in your field is what you played with as a kid experimenting building your idea and trying it out! Actually to groom a person for an engineering position such as software, hardware, system, or design is making my comment focused on parents! So to all of you wannabe parents or professionals who are parents, watch your kids!!! If they drag home a tv , a computer or stereo out of someone recycle bin and break it open and pull out the circuit boards, then give them the space and a few tools!
