How do you communicate and collaborate with other store managers and district managers?

In my experience, clear communication is the backbone of effective retail operations, especially in the fast-paced world of clothing stores. Setting expectations upfront eliminates ambiguity and aligns everyone towards common goals. As a store manager, I've found that regular, structured meetings with other managers and district leaders are crucial for staying on top of performance metrics and adapting strategies swiftly. This approach not only streamlines collaboration but also fosters a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, which is vital in the dynamic environment of fast fashion.

As a manager, either store level or above, you want to interact with other managers in a way that they completely understand that you want to help them as much as you can. Your first contact should be an introduction, and an offer to assist them with anything they might need, rather than a request for help. Be a giver first, and a taker 2nd.

Focus on creating a collaborative rhythm. Treat interactions with other managers as a dance rather than a series of meetings. Sync up regularly, but keep check-ins light and purposeful—like a jam session rather than a boardroom. Encourage open dialogue where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and feedback. However, preface the telephone interaction with a text or email to request the contact to be at the convenience of the individual from which you are requesting said assistance. If you need someone's help, let it be at their convenience.

A typical “walk” can work, but creates fear and often resentment of the DM by local staff. Instead start by walking the competition… together. Randomly select.. or intentionally select several store managers with coverage to walk with the DM. See what your competitor is doing, then go walk your other stores. These are quick walks with 1-2 managers that do not look like a posse of uniformed invaders. Plain clothes walks that will build frames of reference, increase product and segment knowledge, help recruit staff, and importantly train and bond the team. DMs can train and foster skills, and ideas rather than inspire fear.

Imagine each store manager as a unique piece of art in a gallery. Instead of just interacting, curate your communication like a gallery tour. Share stories and insights from each store to create a richer, collective understanding. Offer a “showcase” of successful strategies or challenges overcome, turning routine updates into a collaborative exhibition. This approach not only keeps everyone engaged but fosters a shared sense of pride and achievement, making every interaction more meaningful and impactful.

Let me share a lesser-known fact about collaboration in a retail setting. You hardly see a high level of collaboration among store managers because store management is mainly an isolated job. You don't really get many opportunities to reach out to other store managers. Therefore, retail organizations should actually work hard to bring them all together often. And if the above isn't true for you, then one of the most important elements of collaboration is to identify what's common between you that ignites that rapport. -Do you both love customer service? -Do you both love earning good incentives? -Do you both love generating new ideas for store? Collaboration begins when you find what brings you together and pursue it.

If there is an appreciable demand at one site, but not the other(s), let it be known. Make a transfer shipment to the correct location. The logistics will readily be appreciated and reciprocated..and remembered ! An ice breaker for many chain cohorts.
