How do you create an inclusive classroom?

One thing I have found helpful is to know the students you are interacting with at a personal level. This would allow you to know their strengths and weakness which in turn would allow to plan your lessons and activities accordingly. You can use this information in knowing what are their learning challenges. Understanding this is very important to teach any student. There may be many kids who have a special requirement consider that as well while arranging classroom environment. Referring to different genders and involving various community references in story telling and other lessons will also help in vbringing higher sense of inclusion in the class.afterall the ultimate goal of class is to provide a learning ground for all diversities.

A great way to help yourself reflect is to keep a journal, digital or pen & paper. After your lessons, write down what worked and what didn't. That way, when it's time to evaluate your lesson impact, you'll know exactly what worked and what didn't. No guess work or struggling to remember. It can be simple things too, such as hitting down whether you didn't have enough or too much material for the class period. Maybe the students weren't connecting with your in-class assignments, or maybe you find yourself wishing you had created better instructions for an assignment, or maybe you wish you had gone over something more in depth. With a journal, you'll be able to easily go back and evaluate your successes and areas of improvement.

Question to ask as a teacher is who is including who? Inclusion suggests someone is in and someone else is out. Encouraging students by acknowledging them so that they feel seen, heard and valued. Children come from different backgrounds which goes beyond colour. Know the student. If you know what the child wants and you give them that, they will include themselves in every activity. Let the environment be welcoming for the student, it is not a one size fits all.
