How do you design and deliver engaging educational programs?

One thing I've learned as a classroom educator, is to design your lesson with the intent to answer the inevitable question in the mind of the learner before they ask it. Doing so, keeps them engage, involved, and receptive. As a corporate staff development facilitator, I found that the more interactive your delivery, the better connected your lesson becomes. Lastly, consider how you would feel if you had to sit through one of your lecture, or workshop. Teaching is like being a great chef...If it is not good enough for you to teach...don't share it.

With a keen focus on neurodiversity and inclusion, I find it most useful to conduct a needs analysis. I do this by using the following: 1) The Neurodiversity & Inclusion Learning Environments Profile, a tool I have created for attendees to measure their environment’s suitability for supporting ALL learners 2) Using the results to know how to create, pitch, speak, and interact with my clients (leaders and teachers) 3) Discuss results with leaders and a plan of action based on the results 4) Provide each person with a plan of action to create more inclusive learning environments.

It's about the story. What story are you sharing to help connect the audience to what you want them to learn. It is the same in the classroom with middle school students as it is with adult educators. Show them the connections to their life. Stories are one of the best ways to accomplish this. People invest in stories. A good presenter can share solid information that teachers can understand. A great presenter uses stories and has the audience invested in all aspects of the session and learn and connect deeply with the material.

In my experience as aneducational leader, today's classroom requires differentiated assessments and different instruction. I've always said to my staff there are a few keys to work with to ensure that the students are achieving their maximum. 1) Know your student as a whole...each student has strengths and weaknesses in each area of study, knowing them as a whole will help the teacher create the learning environment that will help them succeed. 2) Education today is not one size fits all. A student may learn better through a project while another can present orally what the have learned and third one excels in traditional testing. Each one grasps the material learned in their own way which is not better than the other.

At Imagine, we have tried many approaches to engage our students. Just as learners are designed differently, each customer will find one of your programs more appealing that the others. The delivery matters. Is it video, text, interactive? How about branching out to something new.... podcast are a great way to present information. Providing different learning platforms and experiences is critical if you are going to reach the many customer bases available to you as the creator.

How you deliver a successful learning initiative is predicated on multiple moving parts: 1. Do you address formal + informal learning modes? Learners want structured but also quick, maybe even quirky ways to share insights. Is there creativity in the way people share? 2. Can people learn from 'experts' as well as each other? It all boils down to how the challenge + queries are posed. 3. Do you have line of sight on people's application of their learning? Or are you just presenting? 4. Have you anticipated + addressed the 'what next'? An eloquent learning initiative dovetails into new, interconnected pursuits. Are you leading the next steps, or are you handing off to new communities? Good answers to these questions are 90% of the build.

Incorporate diverse learning modalities and resources. Recognize that learners have different preferences and strengths when it comes to acquiring information. Integrate a variety of instructional methods, such as visual aids, interactive activities, multimedia resources, and real-world examples, to accommodate various learning styles. This approach enhances engagement and comprehension, making the content more accessible and appealing to a broader range of learners within your target audience.

Allow learners to customize their learning experience by offering flexibility in pacing, content selection, and learning pathways. Personalization helps cater to individual preferences and learning needs. Leverage educational technology and tools to enhance the learning experience, such as learning management systems, virtual classrooms, and online collaboration platforms. Use storytelling & narrative techniques to create engaging & memorable learning experiences. Stories can help contextualize information, evoke emotions, and stimulate critical thinking. Keep abreast of the latest trends, research, and best practices in education. Continuously innovate and experiment with new teaching methods.

The importance of content knowledge cannot be overstated. Always know more than you say. Always be prepared to substantiate your claims with robust evidence. Educators are intelligent and inquisitive; provide a great service to them by having a breadth and depth of knowledge in your area. Also, knowing the content well will free up your mind from having to recall and allow you to focus on being present in the room and engaging with your learners.
