How do you foster creativity and innovation in your training?

Understanding your learners is vital as a trainer because it allows you to tailor your teaching approach to their unique needs. By recognizing their learning styles, preferences, and prior knowledge, you can deliver content in a way that maximizes comprehension and engagement. Ultimately, this empathetic approach enhances the learning experience, boosts retention, and empowers your learners to achieve their full potential

Needs fulfillment is a powerful piece of the puzzle to ensure you have the environment conducive to learning. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs demonstrates that to help individuals learn, collaborate, and take feedback, they must first have their physiological, safety, and esteem needs met.

Since I teach firearm safety, so many people are nervous and apprehensive of the class. I make sure we have an informal group chat before the class starts. Set people at ease and let students know that there are other brand new students in the class. I also offer people the opportunity to come in a few days before the class, and we’ll sit down and just chat about expectations. It sets them at ease. For me, it’s all about making a connection and letting them know I’m on their side.

I do presentations for active shooter response training. Police and military can easily come up with ideas and conversation about the topic. Civilians are different for so many reasons. So giving real life scenarios and asking the audience how they would handle it, it brings them in and starts the creativity. I have found if I have a quiet audience, if I can get one person to ask a question or to make a comment, it sets others at ease and they will freely join.

I frequently use breakout groups to facilitate participation by all. Many learners may not feel comfortable speaking to the larger group but will lead a conversation in a small group session.

As a professional coach and educator, I recognize the value of evaluations and feedback. It will help you adapt to the ever-evolving audience and ensure the program is meeting its objectives.

As a small group supervisor (3 direct reports), I have learned it is important to understand that you are not always the smartest person in the room. Some of the greatest ideas are often born from the least experienced. A lack of experience-based bias can present a raw and unfiltered perspective, which in turn can foster scenarios and ideas that aren't readily thought of by those more seasoned in the field.

I travel the country for active shooter response training presentations. The audience can be anywhere from 25 people to 600 people. I try to do my best to stand at the door and greet people when they come in. And the same when the presentations over. So many people are apprehensive of this topic, and I think if they can connect with me as a speaker and I can set them at ease, things just go better for their experience with the topic. I want people to know that I am a human being, and I literally care about each and every one of them and their personal safety. I don’t want to be that guy that stands backstage, speaks and then leaves. I want them to feel like they can reach out to me after the presentation for questions!
