How do you genuinely network without pretending?

Break the ice and create genuine connections by going beyond surface-level interactions and creating shared experiences. People appreciate when you take a real interest in their lives. Ask open-ended questions that encourage them to share about themselves. Rather than sticking to generic topics, delve into subjects they are passionate about. While it’s good to seek a deeper connection, it’s also important to respect personal and professional boundaries. Pay attention to cues that the other person might want to keep the conversation light or professional.

My take on this is that curiosity isn't just about asking questions. It's about being open-minded, being intrigued by new and different ideas, and truly understanding situations and people. It's about suspending our own opinions and conclusions to thoughtfully consider those of others. This curiosity can also help us in difficult conversations. It can help us stay open, humble, and willing to learn. It's like a tool hiding in plain sight that can help maintain and fix relationships. But, it's not always easy. Being curious also means being somewhat vulnerable, because it requires us to surrender to a level uncertainty. We have to admit that we don't know everything, and sometimes, that can lead to discomfort.

I wholeheartedly support the approach of genuine curiosity in networking. Showing sincere interest in others by asking meaningful questions and actively listening creates a foundation for meaningful connections. This approach goes beyond superficial interactions, allowing you to understand the person's stories, challenges, goals, and passions. Active listening and empathetic engagement not only foster rapport but also enable you to learn from their insights and experiences. By demonstrating genuine curiosity, you convey respect and care for the individual, which can lead to deeper, more meaningful professional relationships over time. This approach not only enriches your networking experience but also opens doors to new perspectives.

By being authentic. In my 500 WhatsApp group ecosystem, I promote 'Open Random Supportive' networking and encourage members to share their trauma as well as their triumphs. There is no need to pretend.

Porter Gale said, “Your network is your net worth.” Who you know matters more than what you know. If you cannot understand that, you are not going to succeed. That is why we spend so much time and effort networking. A recommendation here, an introduction there; opens more doors than sending out emails and cold calling. There is no benefit in pretending. If you cannot do this right, you will not be trusted with the higher functions of management. To network effectively, you need to be somewhat of a known quality. You must be seen to be able to give something to a network. You have to give to receive. Otherwise, you are just another name card, another name, another face. This requires you to be genuine. There is no pretending.

Let's break it down into simple steps to connect with others by lending a hand: You've got skills and know-how, right? Start applying A.B.G. = Always Be Giving! Jump in and help someone out without keeping score. It's amazing how much people will trust and value you when they see you're not just in it for what you can get. Don't forget to say thanks! When someone does something nice, tell them. It makes them feel great, and it can really cement your bond with them. And here's a big one: listen up... really listen when someone's talking to you. It shows you care about what they have to say, and that's the foundation of any solid relationship.

I believe that being genuinely helpful is a cornerstone of effective networking. Focusing not only on what you can gain but also on what you can contribute demonstrates your value, credibility, and generosity. Offering support, advice, feedback, or referrals based on your expertise or network connections can significantly benefit others and strengthen your professional relationships. Following through on promises and commitments further reinforces trust and reliability, enhancing your reputation within your network. By consistently being helpful, you create a positive impression that fosters goodwill and opens doors to new opportunities and collaborations. This approach builds a supportive professional community.

We all have something to offer. Do you know what it is? - Consider a new or honed skill - Consider connections you have that may help - Consider what special talents or gifts you can share - Or, a shared or common experience that can help someone else along on a similar journey - Also, listening is also giving

Be a friend. The best advice i ever got from my mentor was approach like a friend, not a business deal. When everyone is busy asking others about their roles and opportunities, ask them something about their personal life(not too personal, mind you). Could be their go to sport or some recent event and their views.

If you're not into alcohol, avoid wine tastings or drink-centric gatherings. Instead, opt for activities that resonate with your personality, like networking over a hike, a leisurely walk, or a breakfast talk. Engaging in environments where you feel comfortable and happy enhances your ability to connect authentically. As I often say, networking can happen anywhere, even during enjoyable activities like swimming with my swim academy – it's a refreshing way to meet and bond with like-minded individuals.

Let's sprinkle in some wisdom from David Burkus's book "Friend of a Friend" First off, let's think about why you want to connect with others. If it's to genuinely add value to someone's life, you're already on the right track. Burkus emphasizes that networking is primarily about caring for your existing network. Next, let's talk about being yourself. Burkus suggests that your network is much larger than you think it is. Don't be afraid to show your true colors. Share your thoughts and feelings honestly. It's okay to be a bit vulnerable. Lastly, Burkus emphasizes the importance of being present and attentive. When you're with someone, give them your full attention. Listen to what they're saying, and really, truly, listen.

Networking tip: Keep it real. Be yourself.  No need for fancy talk or pretending. Just be honest, show your personality, and let the connections click naturally. Remember, authenticity attracts the right vibes, and that's where the true networking magic happens.

Being open requires some self-awareness. Which means getting out of your comfort zone and being open to learning from others who are not like you. Active listening and understanding your unconscious bias is VERY important here. But worth it!

Each person you meet, regardless of their background or industry, has a unique set of experiences and knowledge. Approaching networking with a mindset of curiosity and a desire to learn can lead to unexpected insights and ideas. This attitude not only enriches your professional and personal growth but also allows you to provide value in unexpected ways. By being genuinely interested in others' perspectives and experiences, you create more meaningful connections, which are the foundation of a strong and diverse network.

Attending networking events comes with a lot of vulnerability - it's sometimes easier to pretend to be someone you're not rather than show your authentic self for the fear of being rejected. It's important to get comfortable with the feeling of vulnerability as it leads to so many wonderful, authentic connections. When we're vulnerable we're human - and networking always comes back to human connection.

There is always something you can connect with a person about and finding that out is always a goal of mine. It doesn’t have to be strictly job or career related either; it could be hobbies, pets, family, etc. Discovering something they are genuinely excited about and showing genuine interest will spark a connection.

Stay true to yourself, express genuine curiosity in others’ experiences, and prioritize relationship-building over immediate gains. Authenticity is the cornerstone; let your connections evolve organically. 💡
