How do you help your coachee plan for the future?

I believe it is essential to get the best understanding you can of the culture in which your person is working in. I agree with the tools mentioned. If I don't fully recognize the culture they are working to thrive in, I can't really know what to do with the data I see from the tools.

Meet them EXACTLY where they are at, not where you wish they were. Be radically honest and open about the current situation, struggles and all. The more real we can be from the start, the more effective we can move into the future.

Our methodology for personal life coaching is BARF. BARF in Farsi language mean BArname Roshd Fardi, and in English language mean Personal Growth Program (PGP).

In my experience, it is somehow difficult to asess the situation from where our coachees are. We need to help them both to go beyond their own limitations but most importantly inside their own being to find the answers.

Within the context of self- reflection, inclusion of discovery of purpose, motivation and fears can provide significant insight in understanding why the current situation exists. Without this clarity, the risk of falling into the same behavioral patterns remains.

If we are talking about an executive, I’d tap into finding his/her purpose in life. Nothing can be more powerful than finding a purpose and always finding a way to reach it. Regardless the circumstances or the gap a person with a clear purpose in life finds a way to reach it and learn resiliency in the way. IKIGAI concept is great!

I ask similar questions and I constantly ask for the "Why". I want them to see their heart; to understand what motivates them to be successful. To grasp what difference they want to make in the company and in the lives of the people they work with.

The article summarizes well the steps to help coachees. In addition, I would add the power of engaging the coachee to think beyond the boundaries of their existing reality. Powerful coaching questions like: what is the legacy that you wan to leave behind, where do you see yourself in the future? What does it look like, what is different, what is better? This helps to actually expand the mind of the coachee and then define what they really want to achieve, what are they passionate about. It's proven to connect them and engage them to go for it.

This is one of my favourite part, as this is where the magic happens. When we start to explore the options, I help my clients to dream big and play with ideas they were not considering seriously before. Often there is fear stopping them to see clearly all the options they have, and our job is to help them work on their obstacles and see what is possible without them. It is a very empowering and beautiful process.

Identifying gaps and obstacles within your coachees world and conversations is critical to their success in moving forward closer to their goals. There are numerous open ended coaching questions you can and often times should ask to help uncover what fear based conversation they are holding on to. Often times the coachee isn't aware they are doing it, hasn't identified the fear and as a result isn't clear why they are clinging to it. Your role as their coach is to help and support them in distinguishing these blocks and disempowering negative narratives in service of them seeing what's possible if/when they remove them. It's one of the more challenging and rewarding pieces of coaching.

I agree with what has been shared here. I also am a big fan of John C. Maxwell's book, Developing the Leader Within You 2.0. He has a great short video urging people to stop trying to work on "their weaknesses" and embracing what you are really good at. Fully developing and unwrapping your gifts. I have seen this approach work over and over.

"Options create value". This is something drilled in the minds of MBA students. However, it is not complete. Athough it is important to have our mindset open for options or different strategies, we need to remeber that each one of them has their own cost to remain open or to pursue. The right balance should be achieved considering that.

Now we are getting into stratgic thinking. I suggest it is important to insure that your person understands strategy. That your person isn't confused between strategy and tactics. I like to use the Ladder of Inference here to help them understand their beliefs and unconscious bias.

All these tips are very useful. They capture beautifully how a coachee may feel a little lost at the outset, and how we can help them get their bearings and move forward

I had already done my ACSTH. However, I found an opportunity to learn at a very different level and I enrolled with Master My Life for their 6 month program for ACTP certification. This was a decision which I always feel happy about. Not only did I learn, I am able to add value to many lives

Here I see that the length of the plan is important. We introduce "short-cycle planning and execution". Why? Because we live in a rapidly changing global economy. Yes, Identify what's working, what's not and what's missing. There is an emotional component as well. We check-in asking what are youmad, sad, glad and afraid of. Fear can really interfere with positive execution and decision making.

As a coach, your job is to aid your clients in pursuing their goals and desires and this can only be achieved using some type of roadmap, framework or outline. Every coach is different and what I use may not work for someone else but regardless of what it is, focus on why it's important and how you will leverage it. Planning someone else's future can't be left to ideas written in the sky. Take the time, take it seriously and encourage your clients to own the process while you guide them!

I trying to understand the relevance of the question to coaching. In my experience, all coaching is to change behavior to achieve some existing Objective, not something in the future that hasn't been defined. If the Goal/Objective has been defined, then it's simply identifying the obstacles and developing action plans to overcome then. Obviously after that is for coachee to take action and follow-up closely - weekly/monthly.

Consider visualisation,with overload of information and challenges one can feel struck and paralysed due to too much of noise.Dreaming as a technique is powerful to support coachees create a visual of the outcome.That further supports them to create look backwards and create goals to make it more real and tangible. Visualisation helps in creating an experience that can work as a pull for actions and accountability. Research suggests that visualisation is a powerful tool for motivation and action.

Accept that sometimes the future will happen to be different than planned, despite following meticulously all the steps earlier prepared. There are events beyond our control, and we need to welcome them with self-compassion. Acknowledge the past efforts invested so far , and course-correct your path accordingly.

One way that I would recommend is to create a vision board for yourself. It will help you to picture yourself where you want to reach or what you want to accomplish in future. And at the same time, ensure that you are upgrading yourself in terms of skills and competencies that will help you to realize the vision that you have created. As an Executive coach, help your clients to plan and implement the above accordingly.
