I have read that when one raises their comprehension their math skills improve and vice versa. I cannot say if it said that one must come before the other and with the fact that many savants are among us, it is even harder for me answer that. However, it must be the case that a language is necessary for high-level math comprehension, to comprehend the symbology used. I make students aware of this for them to question the legitimacy of the claim, but mostly for them to work on two skills simultaneously.

I am limited to what experiments I can suggest inside a maximum-security facility, but I do often remind residents that they have a plethora of human behaviours to observe and then model. I make them aware I am not a scientist and so my own statistical analysis and quantifications are merely from an interest perspective and not true research. The most difficult concept seems to be deciding what is an independent variable from a dependent. Linking (x,y) and y=mx+b to that concept seems to offer a pathway to that understanding.

We have explored current events to analyze large numbers to more personal experiences. For example, we looked at how much was paid for a social media website and then broke that down into how much one would need to spend every month and everyday and every hour and for each second to spend that dollar amount in the average lifespan for an American. That sheds light on many social issues as well as many life experiences.

It is very surprising how many residents inside the prison I work who are completely comfortable spending their earned monies or that of their supporters on the outside, without regard to how that money is spent. Or maybe it should not be. We have looked at fundraisers and personal dealings with other residents to determine how money has been spent and how much is actually coming in from fundraisers. This helps to dispel some myths, but it also reinforces others. Showing the small margins raised during fundraising can be helpful while also raising questions about when and how those funds are dispersed. I cannot answer the latter.

Inside a prison, what does work is to "wear down" the most rigid individual and their thinking by demonstrating how the rigid rules required in mathematics can be extended to real life to analyze many situations. Many of these individuals have been mentally "sheltered" enough that their own interests are clouded by their lack in ability to think critically. Finding their interests and refocusing their energy into positive actions by using math index card matching games, explaining how statistical analysis can is used in sports reporting, and how the repetitive study of math is a hobby which better serves the preservation of our mind, is difficult, but not impossible to achieve!
