How do you integrate security communication with other security processes?

Effective cybersecurity communication, like any other form of proper communication, is to inform with a purpose. In the case of security, it is often focused on helping users understand what behaviors are acceptable, dangerous, or prohibited and why. For every process that is instituted, there must be some form of awareness and instruction. Bake communication plans into the design, integration, and sustaining operations processes with clear goals and success metrics.

Compliance with global best practices and standards (e.g ISO 27001) demonstrates to stakeholders the organization's posture to information security and gives the assurance that adequate policies and procedures are in place to attain and maintain top-notch security governance framework.

In my role as an ethical hacker and cybersecurity professional, I've seen the importance of transparent communication in maintaining a strong security posture. These dashboards were accessible to senior management, IT staff, and business units, ensuring everyone had visibility into the organization's security status. Ensure that communication strategies are developed collaboratively among different stakeholders, including IT security teams, compliance officers, HR, legal, and executive leadership. Know you people, processes, reports, KPI etc. It is very important not to measure everything. This is inefficient. It is more important to measure and steer effectivly.

Risk management communication is a crucial component of an organization's overall risk management strategy. It involves the exchange of information and insights about risks, both potential and actual, among various stakeholders within and outside the organization. Important is to be very specific, not to technically and always quantify everything. The risk management report will be delivered to the management. They have to understand the risks. Otherwise they cannot take a decision.

All projects and implementations should be risk driven. Risks must be tracked post operations. Good vulnerability managment should be in place through a monthly forum. Address high risks through profiling them against the asset value and potential loss in the event of exposure. Tackle risks outside-in meaning more visible the risk is the faster one should address. Residual risks should be tracked and either have a mitigation plan or a approval for acceptance.

While communicating updates, including a short history can also provide a holistic perspective around the incident and it’s surroundings

One critical thing about incident management is communication among all users, customers, vendors and security staff. Everyone should know their responsibilities in identifying, reporting and resolving all events, whether or not they escalate to become incidents that disrupt the business. This gives a trail to investigate the incident. In my opinion, when everyone knows what to do, and they do it to time, it is extremely easy to resolve an event/incident, no matter how complex it is. This shows how important communication is in resolving security incidents. Regular training sessions may be held across teams and stakeholders to refresh everyone of their tasks and responsibilities.

Develop a well-defined communication plan for security incidents. Have it digital and analog (or somewhere else easy to use). Determine who should be informed, what information should be shared, and through which channels. Ensure that incident communication aligns with legal requirements and regulatory obligations. Don't forget to document everything and have a clear process.

Successful incident managment requires a good RACI model and planned table top exercises. During large security incidents there should be a lead expert to guide the teams and assist in fast actions. Communication is key to all stakeholders including the clients that maybe affected by either breaches or denial of service attacks. It is critical to recover a service from a security incident or isolate the issue and contain the impact an incident has to the organization. Proactive monitoring is key and right level logging to identify source issues without too much of false positives.

Users are the weakest security link in any system and with this being said, constant training and simulations is key to understand the behaviors or employees and to design training and audiences based on the results of these simulations. Training should be relevant short and up to date. Make it engaging with different types of training and roadshows. Implement a percentage of the incentive like 5% kpi toward training.

It is very important to have an open security culture.

It is difficult to translate a technical solution to a realized value therefore transparency is necessary when discussing a long term strategy in an organization. Security is ongoing and executives should now be part of the discussion as to how it impacts the organization from revenue to operations.
