How do you select a sustainability framework for your business?

It is important to know that sustainability frameworks are ideal to consolidate the businesses strategic direction, help set company objectives and drive goal setting to execute on your organisation's mission.

At present, I don't think it's possible. The reason being that the entire planet continues to rely on fossil fuels. For as long as that remains the case, any claim of being sustainable has to be considered false or being made in bad faith (same outcome). For as long as these companies continue to set the agenda there can be no improvement. And sadly enough, every single one of those energy companies continue to value dollars over life.

Understanding the why is the most important step. Beyond the framework nuances, why would you consider reporting in sustainability? As a business, which impact you want to create in society? Said this, reporting within a determined framework is the best choice for those looking for meaningful and material impact.

Frameworks are complex and generic by design and have to be adapted for use in your business. Sustainability reporting is an annual commitment and needs a structured approach to implement. Technology is the enabler to deal with the complexities, data and process adaption/creation you will need to do to ensure that all businesses units and departments are involved. Accountability is key and publishing your Sustainability Action Report (SAR) in public is recommended.

Sustainability frameworks do pose challenges, but they are essential to create a meaningful and impactful sustainability strategy. While navigating these hurdles may require effort, the benefits of improved performance, credibility, and stakeholder trust make it a worthwhile endeavor for any responsible business.

Climate science, in general, is an evolving adaptive science. Meaning that, there are no perfect or unique methods to report in sustainability issues. The best advice for understanding which framework speaks better to your business model, is to fully understand your business/industry priorities, and your desired goals to achieve. These will define ultimately the best fit.

The framework must work for the organization. The costs of using (price, time) must lead to a benefit. Employees should not follow processes, which they do not understand and do not get perceived as beneficial.

Selecting the right framework for your context and stakeholders is a challenge. Gathering required data and ensuring relevance and integration can be daunting. Alignment with your core business strategy and maintaining data quality and consistency is crucial.

I repeat myself. There is no perfect framework. Your needs and goals should define the framework of your choice. However, having some understanding of the GRI standards, I agree is one of the most comprehensive and complete reporting guidelines in use. Will be necessary to follow up close the evolution if the ISSB S1 and S2 standards as well.

Frameworks like the UN SDGs, GRI, TCFD, and BIA offer diverse options. UN SDGs align your business with global goals. GRI aids in reporting sustainability performance. TCFD focuses on climate-related aspects, and BIA assesses social and environmental impact, certifying B Corporations but there is not *one* perfect framework!

First, you need to understand the own organization and what it wants to reach with implementing a sustainability framework. The different options must be compared, and then the best fitting chosen. Important not to loose motivation and resources for the activities themselves.

These steps ensure a smoother integration and a more significant positive impact on your business and the world.

Identify what are the top priorities within the framework and accomplish those first, even if its on a general level. You can always go back and improve your data, but losing the motivation after choosing a sustainability framework could mean the end of your sustainability pursuits.

Fully understand the framework and its limitations. Using a framework like a rulebook is a huge mistake to be avoided at all cost. The use of the framework should reflect integrally your materiality assessment. Fail to achieve this may result in a faulty report.

We are in changing times. Companies must consider what is best for them now, but also what they need in 5 or 10 years. The preferred framework is scalable?
