It takes effort to compile these reliable figures, but it is worth the effort! "Translating" these figures into a simple graphic also helps to grasp what is being presented quickly.

Selecting the right data is indeed the foundation of effective HR analytics. I start by identifying my goals. The chosen data should directly relate to my objectives. Then I tailor my data selection to my audience's needs and understanding. For example, senior leaders might require high-level summaries, while my HR peers might benefit from more granular insights. To understand the relationships between HR practices and outcomes, I leverage inferential statistics like correlations, regressions, or hypothesis tests. This will help demonstrate the significance of my findings. Lastly, remember in HR, context is essential. I use benchmarks, comparisons, or trends when available to provide a broader perspective on my data.

I appreciate Willard Brinton's quote: "Just as strong as a cathedral foundation, a presentation is only as strong as the data on which it rests." It's essential to choose data tailored to the target audience and the intended purpose. Here, the key points to consider are the audience and the goal. If we want to be understood and remembered, we must simplify our data.

As I always say to my clients: everything can be done, as coding is the easy part, the hard part is to understand the business problem in order to design an effective solution. The same applies to data visualization, it's not about the most creative one, but about the one that actually delivers the message you want to convey in the least amount of time.

It is also important to note some people can reach information overload easier than others so try to only highlight one key point if you are going to add visual queues to your charts!

One useful utility I have found is to tell the context through past experiences and results.With data visualization you can explain the past, present even the future if you will get the main insights with the analysis take into a count the actions that you will make to resolve the challenge.

People Analytics doesn't always need "data visualization", "statistical analysis" or "machine learning & AI". But it always needs a good storytelling. The storytelling must raise curiosity among your audience, it should create connections in their minds and let them have their own conclusions as well. A simple 5-minute-story of HR data is usually understood much better by the target audience than a regression analysis.
