Share my experience on selecting the right tool. Setting work zero depends on the complexity of the job and material. I’ve used manual methods like an edge finder for simpler setups, which works well for quick and basic tasks. However, for more complex projects, especially those requiring high precision, I rely on a touch probe. The touch probe’s accuracy has saved me time when working with intricate parts, ensuring precise alignment on all axes. For example, during a project with detailed engravings on a metal surface, the touch probe helped me set the work zero accurately, avoiding any shift that could have compromised the design.

Most CNC machines today (or should do) have a probe that finds edges and updates work zeros. Once the machine home/zero has been validated then it's time to use the probe to set the work zero. This can be done across a flat edge or bore, usually a drawing specifies the datum edge so try and use this when using the probe. The machine will automatically set the zero for the work coordinate G code (G54, G55, etc.).

Early in my CNC journey, learning to interpret and modify G-code was a game-changer. While most CAM software automatically generates G-code, I often found that understanding the commands allowed me to troubleshoot and fine-tune operations more efficiently. For example, during a milling job, I noticed the tool wasn’t retracting properly between cuts. Some machines have tool setters which are a convenient way to validate/check tool lengths. Although this doesn't give a completely accurate result. If you don't have a tool setter then you can use a blank piece of material and machine this with the tools you want to set. Then measure the material after the machining process and compensate for the difference in the tool offsets for length and radius.

Create a program to machine a basic part but has all the features you would normally machine such as face milling, external profiles, internal pockets and holes. Check each tool is doing what is it supposed to and once its finished measure all the dimensions and check them against the program dimensions.
