I try to find one thing to work on (i.e time management, or more precise vocabulary) and focus on that over the long term while reviewing in the short term. Did I manage time better on this project or this meeting? How many days did I stay late to meet a timeline I could have been more efficient with? And that usually pushes me in the direction of getting better. Ask a mentor where they see room for improvement and focus on that one thing. You will never be perfect or completely proficient so the focus on one area of improvement is a commitment to the process while rejecting perfectionism.

Many of the mandatory metrics that get reported are lagging and so we must do the work of asking ourselves what happens day to day that slowly builds up to success on the larger more lagging metrics. If a student scores low on the state assessmnet, do we look at their attendance? And if we see lacking attendance do we ask why? Do we have the tools to engage. The best way to set goals for long term success on short cycles is to ask what builds to success long term that happens day to day and build systems of measurement for those metrics.
