How have educational policies impacted the teaching of diversity?

Education policies can inclusively align with and address the specific contextual needs of diverse environments they aim to transform. Policies are a powerful tool for transformation, where equity, access, professional development, and curriculum reform are prioritised. Through institutional policies, institutions can be intentional about inclusive education, that bridge the inequality gab and provide quality education to everyone, irrespective of their background.

In Indian context, We are beginning to transform our methods with NEP. It is expected to provide a wide range of options to learners in the form of the Swayam platform which is one of the examples of it. Apart from this teachers have also understood the importance of going beyond classroom methods & adapt methods like shorts & reels to engage the audience. It is also necessary to understand this is phase of transformation journey which has just started. No need to jump on conclusions at the early stage & keep thirst for adapting new methods will be a key for educators to be relevant in the coming time. It is more important to make sure we make students learn & digest concepts rather than making shortcuts to mug stuffs.

The problem with education worldwide is that it is Government education. Education is too important to be in the hands of bureaucrats. In many countries there is no such thing as private education because private institutions can only teach what governments allow them to teach. Education is so important that it is where there should be the most free competition possible to guarantee the best quality and the best myriads of choice and curricula.

As neurociências vêm avançando bastante e, à medida que avançam, conseguem diagnosticar certas condições que podem influenciar na forma como os professores ensinam e como os alunos aprendem. A formação continuada dos professores é fundamental para que o ensino para a diversidade seja desenvolvido de maneira satisfatória. Impor certas políticas ou práticas pedagógicas aos profissionais da sala de aula não é, a meu ver, o melhor caminho. Na verdade, o caminho inverso é a melhor solução, ou seja, deve-se investir massivamente na formação continuada e incentivar (financeiramente, ou por meio de prêmios, ou pelo reconhecimento) os professores que alcancem resultados significativos no processo de ensino-aprendizagem.

Interestingly, if the right culture is built there will be plenty of diversity within the institution. In fact, when diversity is a natural part of daily life (in other words, part of someone's character) extra initiatives to promote diversity will seem obvious. However, trying to place an artificial emphasis on diversity as a wrapping on an institution which does not exhibit that trait in the first place will not lead to lasting change. Diversity is a function of who you are rather than a program, or a system, or strategy. Those things may help but will not fix ideological issues.

Organizational Culture has a direct impact on the teaching environment of all stakeholders. Governance in education must be flexible and adaptable to the changing world and educators should be empowered and supported by quality services with a conducive working environment.

As aforementioned, it is essential to enhace social skills beyond individuals with special needs and others. Hence, inluding these individuals into enterprises and schools will enrich both - these people and the other components. It is essential to know and to develop social skills so as to interact correctly with every human we have the opportunity to reach.

Limited or insufficient training on diversity is such a gamechanger in the whole conversation about teaching diversity. As an educator, if I am not willing to unlearn my personal prejudice or biases, there is a wide gap between me and my students. Moreover, it discredits what I preach as it goes starkly against the values I (often wrongly) hold. In lieu of an unsupportive home environment, even if the school/college community can engage the students in a healthy discourse on diversity, all the while creating a safe space for the students to express their diverse voices, half the battle is won. Unfortunately, socio-cultural mindsets and some amount of 'shame' (esp when teaching gender diversity) weigh us down.

I definitely agree with the aforementioned points. We must be able to confront our biases and keep an open mind, no matter our opinion on the matter at hand. Everyone is different, and people might feel excluded when the curriculum does not account for the little differences that may exist. When we start to distinguish what is so-called "normal" from what is supposedly not, it creates an "us vs. them" division, which is why we should be careful with what we say, and definitely training should be provided in equity, diversity, and inclusion so that everyone is included.

It all comes down to training and resources. Most teachers I've met are eager to learn everything about anything. Many of them understand that people come from different backgrounds and are eager to learn about those backgrounds. However, some, sadly don't have access to resources to learn about those backgrounds.

Diversity and inclusion is almost fluid in the consistency of its change. It seems like every day there is a new group or custom that needs to be recognized and considered. While this is not a bad thing, it does make it difficult for educators to constantly evolve their lessons to respect and accommodate everyone. Most schools and companies have their mandatory videos on diversity that they have to watch and answer questions about once a year, but that is hardly enough. The policies and presentation method need to keep up with the times. So there needs to be more of these videos and more teacher time required to watch them? Absolutely not. Something less time demanding and more continuous should be considered like a discussion board.

Even though educational policies such as India's National Education Policy (2020) herald nuanced teacher training to support 'all students' and the inclusion of ethnic and linguistic minorities, the understanding and further dissemination of diversity is rooted in mindsets + Educational policies that support diversity and inclusion do lend some semblance of validation to the implementation. Still, it's not lost on us that transferring from policy to practice requires exemplary monitoring and evaluation. Eg: In spite of having policies like the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan, there are significant practice gaps in an average mainstream classroom. Again, most of it is because of knowledge gaps about diversity (leading to mindset gaps)

We must overcome our own internal obstacles including unconscious bias. Difference is an essential part of our history and current reality. A lot of discussion about diversity focuses on the following forms of marginalization: race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. We can teach people about diversity by explaining to that even within their own group, people are different and that there is no one standard that is better than the others. Think gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age need to be talked about; but also think disability, upbringing and experience. The true definition of diversity is having so many different perspectives that between everyone, you can find a way to accomplish anything.

The school system should introduce the voucher system proposed by Milton Friedman back in 1955 as a first step to introduce competition to education. Competition is the only way to improve the curriculum and the quality of education. As Friedman said: “The great advances of civilization, whether in architecture or painting, in science or literature, in industry or agriculture, have never come from centralized government”. Good education will never come from a Ministry of Education nor any bureaucrat.
