How often should you update your resume?

A better question would be when NOT to update your resume. Honestly, you should keep a “master” document updated at all times, and a “current” version with content to switch out/add as needed. This keeps ALL your experience ready to go. -New projects (with impact/accomplishments) -Stretch assignments -Learning/skills updates (which are only useful if you USE them) -Side hustles if they are generally related to your career/aspirations -Volunteer activities that align to your career. If you update your LI profile at the same time, regularly, no one in your current employer’s network will think anything odd about you doing so when it *is* time to look for a new job.

I suggest this: At the end of every week, assess and reflect. What did you do in the past week that made you proud? At the end of every quarter, look at your entries. Is there a commonality? A theme? A trend? Then note that with 3 bullet points. At the end of the year, you should have 12 bullet points. Ask yourself: Can each of these have a metric attached to it? If so, add that to your resume.

Honestly, you update your resume only when you want to job search. But your profile on LinkedIn and any job portal is a whole different game. Why? Because recruiters find you there. I suggest you update your profile at least once a month, even if it is just one bullet point about your latest achievement that month. What you're essentially doing is keeping your profile fresh as per their algorithm and always on top of the pile for profile searches. That means you will keep talking to recruiters, know the latest job requirements and salary movements. Also, you save these contacts as part of your network. Then if in 2 years, if you feel stagnant or not getting at least a 10-15% raise, your next job opportunity is but a call away.

Often times we do more work than we remember so by regularly keeping a log - even just bullet points on your notes app on your phone - you will be able to keep you resume updated. You can also look at other job descriptions for roles similar to yours at other companies to see if there are additional duties that you might've forgotten to mention on your resume. (Just make sure you don't copy and paste!)

Think of your resume like a funnel with the most amount of info in your recent/current role on top. Then work your way down to less bullet points the further back you go in your history. Do not assume we know something you've done in your role if you don't list it. Even if it may seem obvious to you, it might not be to someone reading your resume. If you're too brief with your bullet points it can be a turn off to hiring managers or recruiters. It can make you seem lazy or that you didn't have much to do in your position. Lastly, make sure it's easy and pleasing to read. Too many colors or an overly cramped page that is hard to follow can be a major turnoff. I'd rather you have two legible pages than one cramped one.

I recommend that you keep a running list of accomplishments so you are prepared for your performance reviews. Upon completion of your review, update your resume to reflect those achievements. When actively applying for jobs, I strongly suggest you adapt each resume submission to mirror the language of the company/job description you are applying for.

If you just keep adding details, your CV will just get longer and longer and eventually it will become so bloated that you will need to start again. As you add each new details[s], take some time to review older content to see if it can be streamlined, trimmed or deleted altogether! If you do decide to delete older material, consider whether or not it can be 'archived' somewhere within your LinkedIn profile. It can still be found by recruiter AI.

Every time you aquire a new skill, earn a new certification or level of education, when you change jobs, get a promotion, and even when applying for jobs depending on the required skill sets.
