How to use contrast for dramatic portrait photography?

In a headshot, not normally looking at add shadow to the talent; however, during a portrait session, use of shadow brings contrast into the scene. This can be done with either intentionally picking out the clothing, backgrounds etc when taking photo, but I focus on post editing. I often like to create separate masks for the different colors on the different parts to adjust the hues. I also find it very fun to play with different lighting sources and create cool colors combos on the subject. I often don’t go with exact complementary colors that are opposite on the color wheel, but rather pick things that are one off from the complementary colors. So for example, instead of red and green I would do green and orange, or instead of blue and orange, I do blue and pink, as these are more appealing to me.

A good way to add depth to a photo is to have contrast between the foreground, mid-ground and background of the image. This can be done in many ways including lighting, focus, color, texture and different types of shapes.

Something that gets my attention is a multilayered photography, it's a reflexion of an more realistc enviroment. Using a more "dirty" layout enheances the the whole dept of the project, making the viewer feel a more conected to what they see. Amazing examples of that would be: the movie The Batman (2022) and Dune (2021).

Choose your background wisely and think about how to image with compress with your focal length. A long lens compresses space and blurs the background and a wide angle gives you more in frame and wider background adding to the feel of the shot. You can also move you subject back a few feet from the background to add more depth in the background giving you more depth in the background.

Use the character sketch to define your lighting. Contrast can be made in several ways but dramatic contrast in a picture is different for a character who is 'evil' and maybe up to something and the one who is 'good' but is in trouble. Both conditions can use a dramatic contrast to display emotion. However, in the first case, the crucial face and body parts will be in darkness to portray hideous and untrustworthy behaviour. Nonetheless, in the latter case, the highlighted and darkened parts will be as it happens naturally through ambience lighting however the points of light and dark will be highly contrasting. In this case, one should also use top lighting where light is falling through a source above the character and vice versa.

The eyes are the window into the soul, as they say. Having a strong catch-light is important to me. This helps their personality shine through and gives that clarity and attention-grabbing look. If you don't, you lose the life in the portrait and it becomes duller in some way. Unless of course there are artistic reasons to do this in perhaps a creative portrait setting.

If using flashes in a dark environment, think about the iris, and how it gets bigger in the dark. A sudden burst of flash will capture that, and that might not be the best look - in that case, make sure it is less dark, so the iris will contract.

Contrast can be of varying degrees, and each may have a different emotional impact. Weigh your options and use the most apt to craft a story (however small) for every portrait. An original narrative is quite memorable, and doesn't require high levels of technical proficiency to make an impact.

Finding the right model when possible. If not it’s your responsibility to coach your subject on countenance and body language. Be able to articulate your vision to your subject. Obviously lighting, composition, and image quality are critical. But first and foremost your subject/model has to be able project the drama.

The least edited is the best. Photos that use HDR, Ps/Lr adjustments aren’t as good as manually stacked or photographs sans post processing.

In my experience, it is also very useful to shoot low view, high view, worm view or bird view (I tend to avoid eye view in these cases). This strategy can make the subject pop above the background. Also, using the Dutch angle can provide a feel of speed and movement. For these specific cases, I like using a wide angle lens. However, none of this is an exact science: what works for one photographer or one type of subject may be disastrous for another photographer or subject. It all depends on the situation, the intention, and what the photographer feels. Trying different approaches helps a photographer decide what is best for the shoot and what picture will be the best of all.
