Struggling to engage students with traditional methods?

Mostly the attention span of a student is around 20-25 minutes. After that, they find the tone monotonous and the lecture boring. Then I engage myself with them in general conversation and allow them to express themselves. Once they are kind of back from the monotonous schedule of lecture delivery and are a little alive I engage them again giving real-life examples and asking them brainstorming questions. By the next 20-25 minutes you are done with your lecture delivery without boring the students.

Today’s student has different needs compared to our student days . They can get information at a click and so what they need is to develop their own skill sets to be future ready . Thus teachers should move from traditional didactic approaches of teaching and use strategies which are inquiry driven and student led … thats when we will get students engaged and involved . Try using a bit of tech in class as this GenZ love tech . So teach them how they like and not what you like . Develop their skills and nurture their potential rather than making them cramming boxes

When struggling to engage students, we must demonstrate where our methods, traditional and otherwise lead. If we can prove that they lead to being applicable, then usually, students engage with the methods. Sometimes though, students do not chose the right course for them and in that case they must switch course as swiftly as possible.

As a teacher of Liberal Arts, I generally do not subscribe to the traditional teaching methods. I keep on experimenting. Let me give an example. A year back, I had introduced the concept of peer marking inside the classroom. As a part of the experiment, the students had to pick up specific topics from the syllabus and prepare comprehensive materials on the concerned topics. The materials were then assessed for quality and relevance by others in the cohort and marked accordingly. For students, it was a fun exercise to don my hat for a day. It was a realization for them that the job that we do as teachers is not easy. The current times demand teachers to pass the buck to the students. Only when the students are responsible, they start caring!

I believe technology is very important in teaching today. Children are very much engaged in learning when technology is used. When it is visual, it creates deeper understanding than just listening. Gamification tools and games are much appreciated by students. They delve into learning far more than ordinary teaching techniques. I use these a lot and get great results. I intersperse it with my usual methods of learning. This keeps children engaged in learning as it provides a quick change in the class when engagement gets low. This breaks monotony and keeps the learning going.

I send the video links, podcasts, or case studies for the discussion in the following session. If the cases or videos that we are sharing are long, then I give more than 2 days for the class to read, listen, or watch according to the format of the content that I am sharing and the length of the content. Sometimes I can ask them only to read and make the observations, sometimes I ask them to write some important questions that are coming to their mind which we can take up for discussion. Group assignments are equally powerful and this works both with students and adults. For effective open-ended discussions and getting more perspectives flipped classroom technique is of great help

I have been using the last half of my class to allow the students to actively work on their projects and “homework.” Some students choose to take home their assignments and focus on major writing projects while they have access to me. This has been extremely helpful in learning why they are struggling in certain areas and has guided my lectures going forward.

To engage students who struggle with traditional methods, I've found that the flipped classroom model offers a powerful solution—especially in the field of art history. By shifting the lecture outside the classroom, through videos or readings, I free up class time for active, hands-on learning. In art history, this means analyzing artworks collaboratively, debating interpretations, and applying historical context in real-time. Students take ownership of their learning by arriving prepared, allowing us to dive deeper into complex discussions. This approach fosters critical thinking and makes the learning process more interactive, personal, and engaging.

With today's technology, it's more approchable to meet students where they are at. Asking them to relate a subject to last night's MTV VMA's, the Kendrick-Drake feud, or their favorite movie or meal. This will keep students engaged, as well as help with understanding the concepts/lessons. Generative ai is capable of this, as well as using those key job quality skills like critical thinking and problem solving that employers are looking for.

If your curriculum doesn't feel like it applies directly to a specific career from which you can draw case studies, try talking with your career center. They have access to numerous employers, alumni who are ready to give back with their time, as well as resources (think technology, services, etc.) with built-out cases you can adapt. Integrating experiential learning into your curriculum will definitely engage more students while also helping them to explore careers and put to work some of the great skills you're teaching them.

Students now have Google and AI, they don't need our WHAT and HOW, they can look it up. What they need is the WHY. A bridge in a sea of information that connects learning to relevancy in their lives. With emotional connection, we add in creative interaction. É preciso muito cuidado ao aplicar estas metodologias "inovadoras". Transmissão de conhecimento é hierarquizada, mesmo! Aprendizagem entre pares implica em se assumir um risco de aprender algo errado com seus pares e só perceber isso lá na frente.

Many years ago when I taught in a well known school in Ahmedabad, we had a peer learning program called - Each one, teach one. This encouraged the curiosity to learn and know more. It was far easier for children to learn from their peers as they could connect with them easily. It also built better communication and innovative methods as they tried to teach in easy and fun ways.

Professor de ensino superior deve tratar seus alunos como adultos que estão matriculados no curso por sua livre e espontânea vontade. Professor não é influenciador digital para ficar engajando aluno. Professor tem que ensinar o conteúdo programático e avaliar se houve o aprendizado. E trabalhinho não cumpre este papel.

As an art & design history professor, I’ve found that diversifying assessment methods is key to engaging students with different strengths. In one of my courses, I replaced a traditional final exam with a creative project where students had to curate a digital exhibition. This allowed them to apply their knowledge in a more practical, hands-on way, while developing critical thinking and presentation skills. One student, who struggled with written exams, excelled at this assignment, creating an innovative exhibition that showed a deep understanding of the material. This experience reinforced that offering varied assessments not only increases engagement but also unlocks students' potential.
