What are the benefits and challenges of integrating AGVs with other automation systems?

Some AGVs are more straightforward to use than the standard SLAM-type AMRs. Without the need for Wi-Fi, programming, or expensive integration, they fill a need for companies that do not have high engineering horsepower on staff.

At the end of the day... it's all about costs 💲 and safety... but we can see benefits under different angles: - Direct Labor cost reduction - Avoid workforce shortages - Avoid mistakes - Improve traceability and inventory accuracy - Layout Freedom - Modularity or Scalability - Increased safety - Improved ergonomics - Minimize infection risk - Indirect cost reduction - Increase productivity

When I first worked on an ASRS implementation, I was under the impression “Get it up and running, and you should be good”. That’s the biggest misconception I’ve ever had. Any automation is as smart and reliable as the people that manages it. Any automation brings in at least two operating systems that don’t like to talk to each other. ( One day in future we may have one system that takes care of ERP, WMS, WES, LMD and so on!) To avoid any surprises or additional costs later, a thorough end to end testing should be conducted. Also, a PFMEA is not a bad idea either. Another challenge is integration with people. In general people don’t like change and tend to blame automation instead of looking into the process.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is companies not doing an internal audit of their internal capabilities. For instance, besides knowing how to use or repair a robot, most SLAM-type mobile robots require a fleet manager. This is an extra layer of cost, required knowledge, time, effort, etc.

AGVs are becoming more intelligent, adaptable, and efficient by leveraging AI and ML algorithms. These technologies enable AGVs to analyze real-time data, optimize route planning, predict maintenance needs, and make autonomous decisions to optimize material flow.

The future of AGVs lies in their adaptability and customization capabilities. This will not only improve AGV design and usability, but also open new applications and efficiencies in the industrial sectors.
