What are the best cloud architectures for different types of applications?

Choosing the exemplary cloud architecture depends on your application's needs. Monolithic architecture is straightforward for simple apps with a small team but may need more scalability. Microservices are great for complex apps requiring flexibility and scalability but can be complicated to manage. Serverless suits apps with fluctuating workloads and offers cost benefits, though it might be harder to debug. Hybrid Cloud is ideal for blending on-premises and cloud resources but can be complex to manage. Multi-cloud is helpful for high availability across providers but may pose security challenges. Consider factors like scalability, complexity, and cost to make your choice.

It depends. There is no one-size-fits-all architecture. The kind of architecture depends upon various factors like expected workload, scalability needs, and budget. Personally, I am no longer interested in monolithic architecture despite it being easier to deploy. For a modern, scalable architecture, usually micro-services-based architecture is the way to go and is preferred, this becomes more prominent if one is truly using a Poly cloud env. Serverless Architecture comes into play if one is developing event drive, light weight web applications but it has its own shortcoming of cool off period and time to exist ergo can be smaller subset. Mobile apps may also need API gateway-based architecture to manage and secure API endpoints.

Two good monolithic architectures in the cloud consist of : 1) Traditional Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress, Drupal, and Ghost. 2) Migration legacy systems cloud.

It is often used when rapid development and deployment are prioritized over scalability and maintainability. The simplicity of a single codebase and deployment unit makes it easy to develop and deploy. Debugging and testing can be simpler. Probably the most popular method for microservices architecture is through the use of Docker and Kubernetes. In the cloud this can be extended to stand alone functions, publishing/subscription services like Cloud Pub/Sub or Apache Kafka, and even fully managed services that better handle some tasks.

Microservices architecture is ideal for complex and large-scale applications, particularly those with varying workloads and components that can be developed and deployed independently. It suits applications where fault isolation and scalability are critical. It offers excellent scalability, fault isolation, and easier maintenance and updates. Independent development of microservices allows teams to work on different parts of the application simultaneously. Increased complexity due to the need for service discovery, inter-service communication, and potential performance overhead from network calls.

I don't see it offering any major advantage of docker based microservices architecture except for lower cost maybe. No doubt it has its own glory points but its shortcomings like time to exist and startup time make it useful only for a certain kind of applications. Moreover it can't handle complex , large scale applications hence not useful for many apps.

Products like GCPs Cloud Run or App engine can be great Serverless Architecture based tools when deploying your own applications. Although, these are going to be better choices for services that don't need to be orchestrated with many other services. For example: these are great for APIs, data ingest feeds, and stateless websites.

Web/App Tier - Deploy on virtual servers (EC2), Serverless( AWS Lambda), Containers (Fargate). 2. DB Tier- SQL DB (RDS, Aurora), NoSQL (DynamoDB) 3. Security Services -WAF, Shield, Guard Duty.. 4. Monitoring-Cloud Watch, X-Ray This is how we can pick right cloud architecture & services based on use case.

While staying informed about trends is good but merely choosing them for an attractive techstack may be an overkill requiring significant efforts and potentially unnecessary rework.

In my experience we need to understand the requirements of the application how our solution will solve the application requirements. Every application requires certain approach on the architecture though some of the standard architecture apply based on typical requirement of application like traffic, capacity, storage, scalability, availability, performance, reliability, cost and efficiency.
