What are the best practices for developing a long-term vision for your startup?

Start development of your startup long-term vision from yourself. What is your personal super goal? How can your startup journey help you reach this goal? Perhaps you want to help millions of people or businesses with your product. Great, make it even more concrete. You aim to develop an industry-leading product solving problem A and reach 100k business customers in 5 years with £1b evaluation. Sounds clear. Then, all you need is to split your development plan into steps - a sequence of milestones allowing you to realise your startup vision. Put these milestones on a timeline. How realistic are a timeline and milestones? If not, split your milestones into more intermediate steps, refine time frames, and review your final targets.

This resonates so deeply with me. When I think about the creative endeavors I'm most passionate about, it's all tied back to a bigger purpose. Like, my art isn't just about making cool designs, it's about sparking conversations about mental health and vulnerability.

A few things from many to consider when validating your vision : Conduct thorough market research to understand the industry, competitors, and potential customers. Be prepared to iterate on your vision based on feedback and market changes. Flexibility and adaptability are key in the dynamic startup environment. Always keep the customer at the center of your development process. A business that solves real customer problems is more likely to succeed.

In the early days of SUPPER, I said to my team, that in order to succeed in food delivery, we needed to be the best or at the very least, better than everyone else at the actual last mile delivery process in order to give ourselves a fighting chance. It was met with quite a bit of resistance, as the process was very expensive to implement and maintain, but moreover, completely against what was going on in the general marketplace. Fast forward a few years and I was proved correct. We had built an incredible delivery process, onboarded the most desirable and incredible businesses and even turned a small profit. The moral of this story, if you have a vision and you believe in it, you should stick to it. Otherwise, why start !
