At first, Devine your need between your existing PLC and what technology that provide by manufacturer or your company/customer standard. If there is any protocol that not support by your PLC, it will be add other third party devices like converter, data changer, etc. The second, Devine how many data traffic needed on control and monitoring. Because some protocol have a max data or max devices to communicate to one master communicator. (According to master specification)

PLC software platform sometimes only integrated well with dedicated brand. i.e siemens plc with TIA portal, mitsubishi plc with GX-Work 2, omron plc with cx-programmer. but, sometimes there is software platform can be used to different PLC brand like codesys can be used for programming IFM PLC or beckhoff with dedicated plugin to initiate the device. but for SCADA or HMI we can use different brand, like for PLC we use siemens, but for SCADA we using aveva. brand selection will affect software platform that you use for programming.

Acostumbro a utilizar TIA Portal debido a que normalmente trabajo con PLC siemens. Aunque no me gusta la existencia de tantos PLC con distintas versiones de TIA y la imposibilidad de trabajar al 100% si no tienes la versión correcta del proyecto.

in my experience, to select hardware for efficient way between contractor and user is to define how is flowchart of process, accuracy of measurement and control, I/O list estimation of the plant, P&ID of plant and desired feature in system. after all the data completed, we can select PLC with optimum capacity, I/O type (digital DC/digital AC, Output Relay or Output DC, Analog Current or voltage, Input Hart or 4..20 mA, Profinet/Profibus communication, Modbus RTU, etc) & communication & make sure your field instrument & actuator can send/receive well input/output from PLC. for my self, i recommended to minimize third party converter or gateway because in operational, it will add equipment that must be maintained or replaced.
