What are the best ways to apply for conference speaking opportunities?

In my experience what I found works well is to maintain a list, part of a more detailed market map. This maps out the conference landscape, including any dates, submission deadlines, and contact details. For each conference I would also note down their target audience, and the kind of content that has gone down well. Some conferences may be more technical, and others more focused on thought leadership or inspirational keynote speakers. This information is critical before attempting to pitch anything at a given conference.

If you're trying to see if you're a good fit for an event, go look at the agendas from prior years. Typically you'll be able to find the prior year, if not more. Scan the previous speakers and abstracts. You don't want to match them exactly (they'll certainly want some variety from prior years) but it at least gives you an understanding of how your topics of expertise may fit in.

Las contacto con varios meses de anticipación para presentar una propuesta, llegar a acuerdos y consolidar compromisos oportunamente.

Hace mucho tiempo cuando comencé a desempeñarme como conferencista, acudí a firmas de consultoría y gremios de conferencistas con la esperanza de que ellos me contactaran con clientes que necesitaran mis servicios. Previo a la elaboración de la propuesta conviene una sesión con el cliente para conocer el eje central del evento, cual es el objetivo, si existen otros conferencistas y sus temas para complementar y evitar repetirse, cuantas personas esperan convocar, etc. Una propuesta debe ser como un traje que se hace a la medida del cliente. Mi propuesta se divide en 2 partes: un Resumen, a manera de Abstrac, con diseño muy vendedor, que genere deseo de leer el resto inmediatamente. Dando por descontado que tu propuesta fue elegida, sigue otro paso crucial: preparar la presentación como si fuera la primera vez y la única oportunidad de la vida. Ensaya la presentación una y otra vez, prepara la exposición completa, ensaya el tema, la voz, los tonos, tu comunicación corporal, las actividades, controla los tiempos. Aunque sepas que el Día D, tu conferencia no saldrá exactamente como la planeaste, ese ensayo te dará la confianza que necesitas. Ve a conocer el auditorio, coordina con los técnicos y muy especialmente con los demás speakers, si es que los hay, para sintonizar con ellos y marcar la confianza con los organizadores.

Check in with the organizers and vendors as soon as possible to check the technical and logistical details of the conference. It's definitely not preferred to find out that your laptop can't be connected with the screen just before the session. Doesn't help either with keeping yourself calm just before the presentation.

Cuando la propuesta sea aceptada, partiendo del supuesto de que ha sido aceptada, conviene confirmar objetivos, número de participantes, eje temático del congreso, si se trata de un evento de esas características, etc. Todo aquello que apunte al conocimiento de los detalles que desconocíamos. La preparación de la conferencia propiamente dicha, debe asumirse con la responsabilidad y cuidado de los detalles, como si se tratara del primer evento. La inteligencia artificial es un recurso importante para impulsar la creatividad, pero desde mi opinión no puede reemplazar el conocimiento ni la creatividad del conferencista.

At the end of most of my presentations, I include a final slide with my headshot and a QR code that leads to my LinkedIn profile. Though sincere, I use a very scripted line associated with this slide. I say, "It's a small world. If I can be a resource for anyone in the audience, I hope you'll reach out and let me help." There's a huge portion of the audience that then pulls out their phones to scan the QR code and connect with me. It's a great way to expand your network with the audience that feels connected to you after having heard you speak. Make sure that's an appropriate end for your specific event/session, but I haven't had any push back with this approach yet.

Algo que yo desconocía que existía antes de comenzar mi carrera como speaker son los llamados "Burós de conferencistas" estos burós están relacionados directamente con los tomadores de desiciones de las empresas y se dedican específicamente a promover speakers, están muy bien relacionados y tienen una amplia cartera de clientes, por lo que recomiendo ampliamente acercarse a ellos y aportar valor, esto sin duda exponenciará tu carrera como conferencista.

Vos clients ont besoins d'être rassurés, d'être ûr de leur investissement : soyez généreux dans le contenu que vous partagez. C'est un cercle vertueux. Cela permet d'agrandir son réseau. Et vous en avez besoin

Mucha gente asiste a eventos importantes con el expreso propósito de hacer networking y eso es sano. Así que prepara una dinámica para impulsar el relacionamiento entre los participantes. Cuando entreno conferencistas recomiendo que no hagan su gestión de networking en ese momento. Ese es un momento para el público. El mejor momento para el conferencista es al final. Su conferencia habló por él. Además en la última lámina de su presentación estarán sus datos, y también en el material impreso que entrega y, por supuesto, podrá mezclarse para hablar con la gente al final, si las condiciones son apropiadas. Créeme: si la conferencia fue espectacular la gente buscar tus datos de contacto y te enviará una invitación en Linkedin.

Tu repetición es tu reputación, aún recuerdo cuando regalaba conferencias al principio de mi carrera para practicar, la práctica hace al maestro y como dice mi mentor el Doctor César Lozano, practica, practica y practica. Además de practicar recomiendo que te grabes y al día siguiente analices áreas de oportunidad en tu presentación, por ejemplo, si comunicaste correctamente, si te moviste de manera adecuada arriba del escenario, si tu entrada fue buena, si tu cierre fue bueno, si involucraste de manera correcta a tu audiencia, en que parte de la presentación se motivaron más, todos estos pequeños detalles los irás puliendo y te servirán para que tu presentación tenga cada vez mas impacto.
