What are the best ways to assess global awareness in higher education students?

One effective way to assess global awareness in higher education students is through cross-cultural case studies. Presenting students with real-world scenarios that involve diverse cultures, global issues, and interconnectedness allows them to apply their knowledge and critical thinking skills. For instance, a case study might explore the impact of globalization on a specific industry or examine the cultural implications of a global business expansion. Through analysis and discussion, students demonstrate their understanding of global complexities, perspectives, and the ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts.

In today's AI world, along with good communication and management skills, students should also learn to levarage the use of technology in their daily work. This will help them to be updated with the world. Higher education plays an important role to get closer to real world and real science. Peer learning, strategic discussions and change management are key elements of the same. Leadership and change management are also the two top elements which gets enhanced with the current upskilling.Learning outcomes in higher education refer to the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities that students are expected to acquire and demonstrate by the end of a course or program.This outcome articulate what the learner should know or be able to do.

Reflection and Self-awareness: Incorporating reflective assignments encourages students to think critically about their own cultural biases, assumptions, and learning journey. Diverse Perspectives: Peer feedback and presentations enable students to learn from each other and expose them to diverse perspectives Ongoing Feedback: Adaptability: The use of various assessment methods allows instructors to adapt to the diverse learning styles and preferences of students.

An effective method to foster stronger social connections in education involves assigning group tasks to learners, encouraging collaborative completion, and subsequent presentation to their peers. This could be through concise oral presentations and written reports. In our course on global energy issues delivered at the Ecole des Mines de Paris from 2006, we adopted a blended learning approach. The course content was delivered as Diapason sessions—slideshows complemented by soundtracks—for students to study at their own pace. Following this, students were grouped into teams of 4 or 5 to analyze a country's energy policy and present their findings to the entire class. This approach resonated well with the students and was widely appreciated.

Uma coisa que aprendi nestes anos de magistério é que, sem envolvimento dos estudantes, nada funciona. É preciso motivar os alunos para que eles queiram aprender e vejam sentido em aprender.
