When you're creating a user flow there are really 2 situations: 1. the product exists 2. it's a new user experience In the first case, defining the scope and purpose may not be as really if you are trying to understand the existing experience end-to-end. I'd always recommend this as a practice for any company to get familiar with the current user flow, even if they plan on updating it. It can be great insight into what is inefficient, what can be removed, and where users struggle. In the second scenario, you'll want to define the scope of the product area and the purpose of the project.

I always try to maintain a consistent design language throughout the user flow. Consistency in terms of colors, typography, and visual elements helps users feel oriented and confident in their interactions.

It's not only important to have a consistent style of notation within the user flow, but it should be consistent with the overall convention of notations. If people are used to seeing a diamond shape for a 'decision' in the flow diagram, it wouldn't make sense for you to use another style of shape for that purpose. That'd only confuse whoever's reading your user flow.

Show the user's actions, decisions, and interactions, as well as the system's responses, feedback, and errors. 3. Avoid unnecessary or redundant steps that might frustrate or distract the user. 4. Map only one task in one user flow, avoid excessive branching or looping, and provide context and feedback for users. 5. Use user flow diagrams to combine visuals with connectors to define the sequence of steps toward the desired outcome.

Implement a design system with consistent UI elements, colors, fonts, and other visual components. This maintains a unified and recognizable interface across the application. Having read a few of the contributions in this article, I see that most of it is laid out in an ideal world, but more often than not there are technical constraints, system legacy, and not enough time allocated to do all the things outlined in this article, so my advice would be: - Be strategic and identify where in the flow, or experience, you can provide the most value for the user - Do all you can to keep the flow frictionless (unless need it) - Clearly outline all the different states and possible errors, so that there is always a path to solve it - Keep coming back to it. Be in-context Give the user what they “need” “when” they need it. Eg. A translate functionality can very well sit inside a menu icon (globally accessible) but in my opinion and experience, giving the translate CTA at the reading view with a single tap is a far superior user journey than the former.
