Risk management information must be captured, monitored and reported with a robust and flexible approach in following manner: 1-Risk appetite and tolerance level- at organization and business units level further bifercated in all possible categories 2- Risk faced by the organization, their likelihood, materiality, financial impact, current controls in place and the exposure faced analyzed against risk appetite at all above mentioned levels 3-Opportunities available to the organization along with likelihood, materiality and financial impact measured against risk appetite 4-Report that is organization and its units are within net risk appetite or beyond it. 5-Mitigation action plans to manage the risk within approved appetite.

The balanced scorecard is a start but look at the frailties of this model such as culture of risk/behaviours of risk not being commonly weighted and understanding that balanced scorecard is different across departments with purposeful bias.

In my opinion audit and reviews are best to validate and confirm the risk management processes. Compliance accuracy reliability and effectiveness of risk management in an organization is seen by how well risks are mitigated and managed down to the ALARP level. That requires Board, executive and senior management actively showing in everyday decision making that risk management is alive and not just in a manual tucked away on the shelf!

While I am fully aligned with the main point 'Conduct regular audits and reviews' I believe it is equally important to have follow up on the remediation action plans agreed by the issue owners. Otherwise, companies can perform even bi-weekly audits and reviews without any actions being taken on the risks and issues highlighted by the auditors/reviewers.

Fancy word risk culture! Start at Board level. if they understand how uncertainty affects their business and prepare for these, then the thinking and vocabulary that flows from the top will impact behaviors and decisions made at all levels below. It will be clear very quickly simply by talking, interacting with Boards how they view risk management and the role it plays in strategic and operational matters. Start the change from the top for success.

While using visuals and interactive tools do jazz up the presentation of risks, a more important element is the amount of time and emphasis placed considering and discussing risks impacting the business, especially at Board and Executive level. An interesting tip to watch - is risk management a standing item in the agenda and how high up in the agenda list it sits! That's the clue to how risk management is viewed in the organization.
