I always tell my friends in academia, if you're looking to start a new career in industry, begin by developing the skills that are required. Most of the time, researchers need to develop new skill sets to meet the needs of the industry. Estimate your knowledge, and develop strategies to expand your expertise in the field where you plan to start a career. I usually examine the job profile, list the skills mentioned in the job description, and then start developing those skill sets.
