If a Plant think that they have lack of time & resources to do PM on motors and generators, and has no intention of solving this shortage of manpower, then they should implement Predictive Maintenance (PdM) through online continuous monitoring as an alternative. Vibration sensors, temperature sensors, close continuous monitoring towards key parameters like power, amps, voltage etc. should be the way out of difficulties to perform PM due to lack of time and resources.

Recent days , we experienced that in maintenance field , people lacking expertise in any single Rotary Equipment and trying to becomes "Jack of all trades". I am not agreed and this lead to malfunctioning and just like " Jack of all trades a master of none" Therefore training, coaching, guidance required for up to the mark skill level of staff at one or two rotary equipment to cater preventive maintenance jobs as per plan checksheet a checklist for optimal result and ensure the Equipment reliability and increase the service manhours without unforeseen breakdown and failure , which is the fundamental to do or carry the preventive maintenance of rotary equipment.

Lack of knowledge and skill usually happen along the way. Not at the beginning. This is because, during handover, the OEM should perform on job training (OJT) to your staff. Only as time passes by, your staff may resign or retire, and come in the new guys is when u start to face this issue. Solution should be ensuring proper documentation of your training plan and material, as well as having proper competency development plan.

Too many plants ignore this. You're going to pay for it on the front end, or the back end...and let me tell you, the back end is WAY more expensive. A good PM program ends up being a huge cost savings.

Probably not directly answering the question, however, i believe some people neglect Preventive Maintenance (PM) because they notice others "doing that", when actually, others are not neglecting PM, rather, changing PM frequency based on data from Condition Based Monitoring (CBM). This is what we call Predictive Maintenance (PdM). Therefore, wrong understanding towards how connected PdM is with regards to PM, often results in either nothing happens with the PM despite performing CBM, or, CBM itself becomes a "time-based maintenace" which is, well, PM. CBM should be used as a PdM, which results in updates and changes in the PM. Not "neglecting" PM.
