What are the costs of cloud migration and refactoring for software design?

Cloud migration promises cost savings, but without careful management, expenses can spiral. To stay on track, organizations should implement robust cost optimization strategies. This involves understanding cloud pricing models, utilizing reserved instances, and adopting cost-effective resource allocation. The first step in managing cloud costs is crafting a well-defined budget plan. Cloud providers offer tools and dashboards that allow organizations to monitor their spending in real-time. The cost varies widely based on several factors. 1)Ongoing cost based on the infrastructure usages: VM (CPU, RAM), Storage, and network. 2)The cost associated with software licenses. 3)Data movement to and from cloud network. 4)Monitoring: Ingest and retention of log data. 5)Skill update: Team members may need training to do migration and software refactor. 6)Lack of on-premises application analysis impacts the cost before and after cloud migration. 7)Testing costs: Automated testing tools and resources, should be considered. 8)The DevOps practices and tools used to automate the building, testing, and deployment of apps and infra in the cloud env 9)Implementing security measures and ensuring compliance with regulatory req may involve costs.

There are various factors : 1) Complexity of the application 2) Selection of cloud provider 3) Amount of data to migrate and storage 4) Compliance and Security Requirements 5) Monitoring tools 6) Team Training

Not every application should be moved to cloud, need careful consideration on below points if it makes sense to do cloud migration: 1. Is the application cloud ready or can it be made cloud ready? 2. Does the application contain sensitive data and does data protection rules allow you to do so ? 3. Current and future number of users and usage patterns should be clearly understood. 4. How non-prod environments can be provisioned and if they can be different compared to prod to save on costs. 5. Cost comparison should be understood and estimated budget in place. 6. DevSecOps, SLA, SLO, Network requirements and other NFR's plan should be in place. 7. Are all tools/alternate tools required by the application present on cloud ?

Refactoring: where code dreams go to die, but at least they leave a clean corpse. It's a software developer's version of a New Year's resolution to hit the gym. In theory, a noble quest to transform clunky code into something better. It's about "improving" code without messing up what it does, a digital nip-tuck. But let's be real, it's often less about achieving coding perfection and more about developers looking at their old code and going, "What was I thinking?". Refactoring promises a world where code is as readable as a good novel, modular as LEGO blocks, and as elegant as a Bugatti. It whispers sweet nothings about reducing bugs, aligning with the latest fads ( ah-hmm best practices), and turning your code into a well-oiled machine.

Rather than consider refactoring a coding exercise, it helps to think of it as a product requirements exercise, only expressed as clean interfaces in a high level language, as close to human-readable as possible. The goal of refactoring therefore is not really to just generate clean code but to generate cleaner, more accurate descriptions of the product requirements. The artistry comes from finding the right level of granularity so as to describe in sufficient detail what is needed, but to leave out enough detail as to how best to do it, such that anyone can rewrite the whole thing again and again, using newer paradigms or better ideas without ever not meeting the requirements.

The goal is to improve the code's readability, maintainability, and overall quality while preserving its functionality. Refactoring involves making small, incremental changes to the codebase, such as renaming variables, extracting methods, or rearranging code blocks, to enhance its design and make it more efficient. The key principles of refactoring include maintaining a working system, applying a series of small steps, and continuously testing the code to ensure that the behavior remains unchanged. Refactoring is a common practice in software development to address technical debt, enhance code quality, and facilitate future modifications.

There are multiple costs associated with migrating to the cloud. In a lift and shift scenario, you'll incur the costs of the compute, storage, databases, etc. as well as the labor costs associated with the migration itself. You'll need expertise to map on-prem to cloud infrastructure. In a redesign scenario, which I often recommend to achieve the full benefits of moving to the cloud, you'll still incur infrastructure costs. However, these will be cloud native PaaS services rather than IaaS, which may save money. This often requires more extensive design changes to the applications, but you may fully realize high availability, scalability, and performance exceeding the results of a simple lift and shift.

There should have additional cost such as cost related to interconnectivity. Many organization may using both on-premise and cloud data center. It requires the secured and high bandwidth network for system on-premise to communicate with system deployed on cloud.

On top of skills and tools, a cloud migration often requires a mindest shift across teams going beyond technology. Training, upskilling and hiring require time and investment and only the practical experience will allow to reach the optimal result. Cloud and its service offerings are evolving quickly, you will need agility during your migration in order to adopt new paradigms and services that might not have been available at the beginning. A cloud migration is usually not a one shot thing, it’s a multi step process where you gradually perform transformation steps that match staff experience and skill while at the same time minimizing risks to customers.

There is the cost of the cloud and the cost of the people who implement the migration. People should be easy to estimate. But the cloud cost… With on-premise you are used to predictable fix costs. With cloud its all usage based (pay as you go). And migration can use more resources then the regular operations. Watch our for these cost related problems: - On top of the storage, cpu, ram, nodes, etc… there is also network traffic that is usually not clearly stated among the paid resources. - You may underprovision the resources (aka. don’t get enough), so things break during migration at a late stage, and you need to start over. Thats a big waste of money, so better to overprovision for migration. - Decide a backup strategy during migration

In my experience cost majorly depends on the degree of refactoring we are planning to do . Instead rough cost estimation I would like to share some important pointers which can help you estimate it right. 1. Avoid over-engineering do what is needed for practically visible goals. 
 2. Understand what is needed , revamp or refactoring, consider revamp if refactoring is costlier and long term in comparison.
 3. Respect the legacy - As it has served well for a specific time it must have something good, encourage team to learn and understand the OLD architecture's intent, pros, cons better before refactor with new architecture .

Refactoring is often misunderstood as a quick fix, but it’s really an art that demands deep understanding and careful execution. The cost of refactoring isn’t just monetary; it’s about investing time and resources wisely. Strategy and assessment phase sets the foundation, where we identify what needs improvement. Implementation and testing phase is where the real action happens, often requiring additional tools and skilled personnel. The final stage, optimization and maintenance, is crucial for sustainable benefits. It’s all about striking the right balance between immediate functionality and long-term code health.

Refactoring is a way to rewrite code to have better code metrics and implement best practices to the code structure without breaking the output result from processing the input. It requires time to plan the changes and time consumed within the sprint. Then, it needs benchmarks such as unit tests to be ready in order to ensure functions are not broken after being rewritten.

Not everything needs to be migrated to the cloud. The best type of workloads to migrate to the cloud are those that need to scale up and down frequently, those that are only needed occasionally, or those that need to be available around the world.

From my perspective, cloud migration and refactoring are not comparable. Refactoring is a good engineering practice for better code structure, performance, and reliability. People should always look back to see if there is any chance to refactor. However, cloud migration is a huge and challenging project that the organization may or may not benefit from, it depends on different cases.

Like many others, I've been exploring various cloud service offerings available in recent years. I invested considerable time initially researching the existing options and subsequently conducting several tests. It required a significant number of hours as the technical prerequisites to comprehend them are quite demanding. As an independent developer primarily operating solo, I eventually concluded that these cloud services didn't align with my needs. They are tailored for IT setups within large organizations that can justify allocating specialized personnel to leverage such services. In practice, I confine myself to managing my VPS servers without delving deeper into these platforms.

Refactoring ist ein fester Bestandteil bei der "Produkt"-Entwicklung und muss eingeplant werden. Ohne funktionierendes und gelebtes Refactoring kein marktreifes Produkt. Daher stellt sich aus meiner Sicht diese Frage nicht.

To minimize friction in cloud migration, focus on thorough planning and stakeholder engagement, choose the right migration strategy, prioritize security and compliance, and opt for phased implementation with comprehensive testing. Upskill your team for cloud technologies, use automation and migration tools effectively, and continuously monitor and optimize post-migration. Leverage external expertise when needed to guide the smooth transition.

When it comes to cloud there’s a fundamental shift in skills (and practice). Cloud brings infrastructure closer to software engineering through infrastructure-as-code. Understanding how to leverage that and expand the skills can simplify some of the application complexities by using cloud technologies. To ensure successful migration to cloud the software engineering needs to expand the skills to cloud infrastructure and adjust the developer loops to avoid slow cycles e.g. figure out how to test the functionality by deploying the code into lambda without going through full software and infra pipelines (when in development). Logically you would need 3 pipelines - for infra, for software and for telling the infra to use the versioned software

When migrating to cloud, you need to be mindful of the responsibilities that you as the application/platform owner and the cloud provider need to share. These responsibilities will include security, compliance and sustainability. The cloud provider will be responsible for the security and compliance "of" the cloud where they will implement the security best practises and regularity compliance in their infrastructure and the cloud services they provide. You as the application owner need to be responsible for the security and compliance "in" the cloud, where you utilise and configure the cloud services properly to implement the security and compliance in your applications.

We can also add different type cloud migrations like lift and shirt, refactoring, re-architecture and also specify some considerations to note while taking the action, like replication capabilities of the services, availability of the services etc

Refactoring may not always provide immediate benefits, it take time to become apparent. Refactoring should not go too far, as this can lead to over-engineering and therefore wasted time and resources. And most importantly, we must not forget to update the documentation on time; losing current documentation can make it difficult for future developers to understand the changes and maintain the code base.
