In addition to having back up computer (which is an absolute must!) I also like to ask DJ's if they run their equipment on a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) which can keep equipment running in the case of a power outage or electrical surge.

Unfortunately demos or mixes are a pretty useless tool when hiring a DJ for a few reasons. A demo or mix can demonstrate if they are good at transitioning between songs however it does not demonstrate their ability to read a crowd or be entertaining or engaging. The other problem is that mixes are easily stolen and even modern day DJ mixers have auto sync features. The best way to get to know your DJ is to speak with them in person or via web conferencing to get a feel for their personality. Also have some good questions for them such as: - What are some go to songs when the dance floor is thinning out? - How do you handle guests making requests (there are vastly different opinions on this in the DJ world)

If possible, attend an event that the DJ already has booked and see how they interact with the crowd, and use that energy to change up their set or create a dynamic set list. There’s nothing worse than going to an event and the DJ plays the exact same set as a competing event. Even if it’s the same type of audience, understanding the way music can add to—or detract from— the stakeholder experience is key.
