What are the current and future trends and directions of transformer models for AI?

They are widely used to solve problems like ASR, Speech to text, Text to speech, Question Answering, Voice Recognition, summarisation. Once LLMs are trained and utilised for language specific tasks. We can easily use them for general NLP task using zero-shot, few-shot learning. Approaches like RAG(Recall augmented Generation) and Transfer learning are used to extend LLMs for the data which is unseen for LLMs and to overcome hallucination problem with LLMs.
