What are the differences between R and Python for data analysis?

The choice often depends on the task - for interactive exploratory analysis and modelling R shines, while for production tasks and custom analyses, Python's versatility can be an advantage.

In my 10 years of experience in R and Python, I dont see much difference and advantage of using one over other with respect to data structures as both of them support most of the commonly used formats. One benefit in R is you can build custom objects combining different data structures like matrix, vector, list which is very much useful when dealing with muti dimensional data. Both python and R had pandas and tidyverse packages for efficient data parsing. But when working in machine learning and deep learning, I prefer python over R as it has good support for file formats like arrow, pickle and using GPU with python is easy over R.

That said, for production-ready dashboarding and applications, Python's bokeh and streamlit show real promise, while R Shiny apps can be slow and lack flexibility.

With the invention of Quarto and its support for Jupyter Notebook, one now can easily convert a Jupyter Notebook into any format such HTML, Word, and PDF in a similar way to R Markdown.

It is true that R excels over Python in data visualization. It is widely adopted in academic and research as you can produce high grade publication ready plots in R using packages like ggplot2 and ggpubr. There is strong community base for visualization especially for bioinformatics domain. But when comes to production ready application, python outperforms R in the application stability and deployment process. Though Shiny is very easy to setup and develop, unless you subscribe to commercial plans of posit products like shiny server you dont get stable production support. My suggesstion is to use docker + shiny to obtain some level of production ready applications.

Complex mathematical problems can be solved by the help of R. Most scientists and researchers frequently relied on data analysis. At the time of stand-alone computation the processing of packages like statistical R is very powerful when the task of data analysis is required.

There is no doubt that Python outperforms R when comes to machine learning and deep learning applications. Having said that R has good community base for statistical models. when you are looking to explore and apply any complex statistical model, I am pretty sure you would find some library within R to work with especially in environmental modelling and biological modelling whereas python is more restricted to common application of ML. But when i look for model deployment and data integration or MLOps, definately python has better support as it is designed for production environments.
