What do you do if imposter syndrome and self-doubt are hindering your success in the Creator Economy?

Imposter syndrome is a huge cause of workplace burnout... but often we don't even recognize that this is what's going on. It presents as stress and a secret lack of confidence that we dare not show. However, the first step is, in fact, to recognize that there is a VOICE inside (and it's not yours) that's comparing you to others and convinced you are falling short. It's incredibly crucial to recognize this voice in order to challenge it and relegate it to the back burner. Usually it's a learned voice... ask yourself "where did I learn that having a strong Inner Critic like this was going to keep me safe?" Because usually that's the role of this voice - it thinks by criticizing you and pushing you'll "become better."

Acknowledging your feelings of imposter syndrome and self-doubt is the first step to overcoming these challenges. Recognize that these feelings are common and that many successful individuals experience them. Embrace vulnerability and understand that it's okay to feel unsure at times. This self-awareness can help you address and manage these emotions more effectively.

I often struggle with this myself, and have taught myself to reframe my thinking. Instead of focusing on what I believe to be true, I start with writing a list of my true tangible accomplishments and remind myself of my contributions. Typically this list is longer than you expect. Acknowledging what you know and creating and using affirmations based on these contributions can help you set attainable goals built off these past accomplishments.

The best way to banish imposter syndrome is to realize that it's not your authentic, most loving and self-honoring self talking. It's a "learned voice" we could call the inner critic - whose job it is (it believes) to judge and criticize you so that you'll make changes, perform better, and not mess up. It actually has a positive intention underneath the self-judgment, but it's misguided. The best thing to do is get quiet, anchor into your most kind and compassionate inner knowing, and ask yourself "what is the truth about my performance?" Allow this part to remind you of your wins, your triumphs, your courage, your successes, and most of all - that you are right where you're supposed to be right now.

Reframing your thoughts involves challenging negative self-talk and replacing it with more positive and realistic statements. Focus on your strengths, accomplishments, and past successes to boost your confidence. Remind yourself that everyone experiences setbacks and failures, and they are opportunities for growth rather than signs of incompetence. By reframing your thoughts, you can build resilience and tackle imposter syndrome and self-doubt more effectively.

Setting realistic goals is crucial in overcoming imposter syndrome and self-doubt. Break down big objectives into smaller, achievable milestones to track your progress and build confidence. Celebrate each milestone reached to reinforce your capabilities and keep yourself motivated. There’s this false notion that we have to do it on our own or should be self sustaining. We need others, we require connection and imposter syndrome can be a great teacher if we allow it to be an indicator of when we need to pull in another set of eyes to provide feedback and encouragement in those less confident moments.

Embracing continuous learning can also help combat imposter syndrome and self-doubt. Seek out opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills, whether through online courses, workshops, or networking with industry experts. Adopt a growth mindset that views challenges as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks. Remember that everyone experiences moments of self-doubt, and it's okay to ask for help or seek support from mentors or peers. By prioritizing learning and growth, you can build confidence and overcome imposter syndrome in the Creator Economy.

Focus on taking action and see each step as an experiment. There is often no real downside to "failure". In fact, each action regardless success or failure is a valuable data point. The worst thing you can do is to not do anything and stay stuck in your thoughts.

Once you recognize imposter syndrome, you really have to be a WARRIOR against it. And I mean a strong and powerful force to say NO to the thoughts that you are less-than or not enough. You must say "I will not indulge this voice - this voice is not truth, it is learned from parents, peers and society." And then, you go about your business (your creating) from a place of SERVICE. You're here to add value to the world. Focus on the people you are here to serve and allow your unique magic out in full force. It's a shift from thinking about oneself to thinking about those whom you're committed to benefitting.
