What do you do if you lack direct experience in a new field on your resume?

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫! Although exciting, it can be a bit nerve-wracking when we don't have direct experience for the job that we are applying for! Luckily, in this day and age of Zoom calls, shared Google docs, Projects Management across ALL lines... our jobs are actually more similar to each other that they have ever been! As an exercise, look at the profiles of 15-20 people that hold the position you are going for. Study them. Look at their job descriptions.. their ABOUT section... see what they post about... this will give you amazing insight into the skills they use and the transferable skills you actually have! Then write it down!

If you are trying to change careers, then the first step is figuring out which skills are transferrable (and desired!). The best way to do this is by thoroughly reviewing your target job description (JD) and figuring out which skills they are seeking and how that aligns with your own background. And trust me, it isn't enough to JUST list skills. You also want to reflect on your previous experience, education, volunteer work, etc. to find relevant examples. Pro Tip: I like to write out these achievements using language from your target position or industry. This will both help optimize for the ATS and help connect the dots for the hiring manager.

If you don't have a lot of hands-on experience yet, but you did just work really hard to complete a degree or training program. Well, there you go! Highlight those impressive professional development ventures front and center. You may even consider bringing that Education section up to the top of your resume, even if you do have several years of (otherwise non-related) work experience under your belt. If you led a project or initiative as you were completing your degree or training program, mention it! You could also highlight any academic achievements, honors, scholarships, or awards.

For example, if transitioning to a tech role and you've completed a coding bootcamp, detail this prominently. Include key projects or achievements from these experiences to illustrate your hands-on skills. This demonstrates not only your foundational knowledge in the area but also your dedication to continuous learning and professional growth.

If you've taken courses, attended workshops, or earned certifications relevant to the new field, make sure these are prominently featured on your resume. This demonstrates your commitment to learning and growing in your new chosen field. Even if your formal education isn't directly related, highlight coursework or projects that have given you a foundation in skills relevant to the new field.

Ok, so you don't have any relevant experience OR training. No problem! You do have passion and enthusiasm, and that is so important. Heck, in most cases, the employer will need to train the new employee. Even if they do have relevant experience. So if you are passionate and a great culture fit, then you are most certainly a strong candidate. With that being said, you will still need highlight your transferrable skills and experience to get noticed. Perhaps you have worked on personal projects, or have hobbies, volunteer work, etc. that are relevant. Well, there you go. What a great start! Good luck. :)

As this says, SHOW your passion and enthusiasm. What it doesn't say is don't TELL it. Using the word "passionate" does nothing. Completed Blah Blah, Yadda Yadda, and So On training programs SHOWS it. This is telling something: The horse ran. This is showing the same thing: Mane flowing, flanks gleaming, the horse streaked through the forest as the thunder of its hooves slowly faded in the distance. Use details of HOW you achieved something to show passion. *Realized upselling as a server increased tips > Researched ways to improve customer comfort to encourage longer stay > Developed new ways of showcasing specials > Offered suggestions of favorites that were slightly higher priced Perfect for someone going into sales!

Consider using a functional or hybrid resume format to emphasize your skills, qualifications, and achievements at the forefront, rather than focusing solely on chronological work experience. This format allows you to highlight your strengths and potential contributions effectively.

This way, you can highlight your most relevant skills and experiences up front, making it easier for hiring managers to see your potential value in the new field.

I disagree with functional or hybrid. If you are using a chronological resume filled with achievement, it's much better than listing skills and saying you have them. Tell YOUR story the way we tell stories to children. Start at the beginning and engage the reader by filling your story with lots of achievements. So, functional for leadership you write: Managed team of 10 people. (yawn) Achievement based: Increased client satisfaction by 12% by initiating monthly training for team of 10. > Observed employees prior to individual meetings > Recognized service and training gaps > Created and delivered fun training to help staff reach full potential Who would you hire?

Customize your resume for each job application by aligning your qualifications and experiences with the specific requirements and responsibilities of the role. Tailoring your resume demonstrates your commitment to the position and increases your chances of standing out to hiring managers.

Use the job description as a guide to identify the most important qualifications and make sure your resume addresses these with clear examples from your past experiences, even if they're from a different industry.

This SHOULD go without saying but, unfortunately, most people have a generic resume and send it to everyone. By using achievements, you can show your skills and customize each resume for the position you want. How? Read the job description! What do they want? What have you done in the past that is similar? They want a client-forward person. You were a waiter in a restaurant. Talk about how you got the highest tips. Or, that people came back and requested your section. Obviously, you put the client first and made them feel welcome and seen.

Networking can be incredibly valuable when entering a new field. Connect with professionals already working in the industry through LinkedIn, professional associations, or community groups. Not only can they provide insights and advice, but they may also alert you to job opportunities or advocate on your behalf. Additionally, consider internships or volunteer opportunities in the new field to gain direct experience; even short-term roles can add valuable context to your resume and show your commitment to making the transition.

Thinking about a career pivot? Start by looking back at the contributions you have made as you progressed through your career, as well as what you've enjoyed doing the most. This can help you determine which roles to target and which skills to highlight. Use this data to outline how your past achievements and the skills you have acquired and applied have prepared you to be a suitable candidate in the new field. Remember to mention any volunteer work, projects, or courses demonstrating your interest and capabilities and that you're serious about this pivot.

We often write military to corporate transitional resumes. It's sometimes difficult to see the connection. However, here is what military veterans bring to the table: ability to follow instructions, adaptability, precision, attention to detail, honor, understanding hierarchal protocols, on-time delivery, working in or leading large teams, etc. It's important to stop thinking about what your job duties were and think about what it took for you to perform them well. Your previous skills all contributed to where you are now. Sit down and really THINK about those times when you totally amazed people by going the extra mile.

This can be particularly effective for gaining practical skills and can be listed on your resume under "Volunteer Experience" section. - Side Projects: Start a side project that allows you to apply your skills in a practical context relevant to your new field. Whether it’s developing an app, starting a blog, this can provide concrete examples of your skills and initiative. - Professional Associations: Join professional groups or associations related to your new field. Many offer resources, training, and networking opportunities that can enhance your understanding of the industry

Consider enrolling in courses, workshops, or obtaining certifications specific to the new field of HR Management. This demonstrates your proactive approach to learning and adapting to the requirements of the role, even in the absence of direct experience.Emphasize your ability to adapt to new environments and learn quickly. Highlight any instances in your career where you successfully navigated transitions or took on new challenges with confidence and resilience.
