Taking a step back and looking at your speech as a whole, from a somewhat external POV, can help you find core pieces that connect throughout. Breaking a speech down into the core topics then provide a foundation with which to connect outside analogies to.

The easiest and quickest way to identify your themes is take inventory of your entire speech and view it as a journey you're taking the listener on. Where does the story begin, what is the climax and how does it end. What are the central points that need the most emphasis and how can you bring the visual aspect into the experience in order to further deepen their understanding of the concepts?

Think about the emotional impact you want your visuals to have. Do you want them to evoke a sense of inspiration, empathy, or determination? Select visuals that align with the emotional tone you're aiming to convey.

Keep your mind open to the creative, try not to be overly narrow in the things you can connect your speech to. Find inspiration in nature, videos, social media, other speeches, talking to people. Find what resonates, on an emotional level, and transform it into a visual.

At this stage, understanding your audience is key! The types of metaphors and imagery you choose will depend on the cultural background of your audience. It's important to note that different cultures ascribe different meaning to the same object. For instance, the passage describes using a butterfly to signal transformation which is great for a US audience. However, this same symbolism means something completely different in other cultures. Understanding your audience becomes evermore important if you choose to go this route.

This is one of my favorite things because it brings the science of Pavlov's dog to the forefront. If you can add in verbiage that engages the senses, you will connect with your audience on a deeper level. For example, if I were to say "the smell of smoke from a simmering firepit in the start of a summer night" - more likely than not you will then start to smell that smoke as if you were standing in the firepit.
