Not enough to get lucky to have been involved with a successful outcome, but repeat success, even small is key. This doesn’t mean there isn’t short term “mispricing” - results compound over time and like investments can have periods of over or under pricing.

They can offer valuable perspectives, help navigate challenges, and connect you with valuable networks and resources. Additionally, their endorsement in your absence can increase your visibility and reputation within your professional circles. Work hard but smarter, and when opportunities don’t come your way, never give up, keep pushing.

I strongly believe that in order to climb up the career ladder in your organisation, start by getting opportunities to do parts of the next role. For example if the next role is that of a people manager from an Individual Contributor, start by training/onboarding new employees, mentoring juniors, scheduling work etc. This way it is easier to build a case and test your aptitude for the role. Secondly, make sure you have a sponsor who has visibility into your performance and potential and can speak up for you in career decision meetings

Inform relevant parties of your intention to advance and request their guidance, support and blessings, while emphasising your commitment to putting in the effort. Ultimately, each employee is responsible for their own growth, though the organisation may offer tools such as training, it remains the employee's responsibility to grab those opportunities. Take initiative by behaving as if you're already in a higher role, activities such as volunteering to chair meetings, filling in for senior staff when they are not available or even initiating cross functional projects that can benefit the organisation can help you.

Also it depends on corporate strategy (or mostly team strategy), if they prefer team members do the same thing at a certain level. No need to grow. they might lose some talent continuously but it is what it is. the only good thing is the team can be very stable to learn whatever you need and some people like this place to rest or prepare for retirement.

Office politics and bias play a huge part in you receiving a promotion or staying in the same role you are in today. Your biggest ally must be you direct manager/leader. Your next biggest ally must be their manager/leader. Without that internal support, you are stuck and may need to consider another company to get your promotion. With that support, you can document your achievements and impact to build your case. If your manager is a roadblock to your career development, look to transfer internally first, aligning with a better leader that appreciates and respects you and your contributions.
