I was fortunate enough to share a cocktail with Phil Condit, the former CEO of Boeing. Our company was in negotiations to acquire Financial World Magazine and we were hosting the CEO of the year awards. He was the prior years recipient and was there to hand it off to Sanford Weill, the founder of Citigroup, the year of the big merger. I was able to ask Phil ( a very genuine man by the way) What his top three recommendations were for a leader of a company. his reply was 1) Stay connected with your people, 2) Make sure communication is a core competency and 3) Know as much as you can about your industry and the factors that can effect the sector. Now that was approximately 25 years ago but I think it still holds true.
