What do you do if you want to find the best companies to target in your job search?

"Best" companies is subjective. What might be the best for some, may not be for others. Moreover, companies pay to enter "best company" contests or get listed as such in the media. So, when thinking about what's best for you, consider the size of the company, the maturity of the leadership team, etc. Ask about their diversity values. To reverse engineer this a bit, think about the types of companies that can actually have the title, scope, and compensation you want. Ladies, be aware that some companies, like FairyGodBoss, have paid and self-reported information about their culture—make sure you're taking the information with a grain of salt. An exemple of a bad targeted job search not in line with my clients's goals, was when they sent their CVs to every companies advertising jobs with the same job titles. I believe it's critical to first know what are the clients values, must have and desired criteria for their future role and find only companies who match these criteria.

One cannot generalise the job and position in various jobs, at times the organisation is struggling but people working are throughl and it could be other way round too, however what is important is before taking up do a little homework and then as situation comes give your best till you feel you are able to make your way out and contributing or look for the next.

Lots of good advice in the comments left by everyone on this topic. I'd add 2 thoughts. One, in the US and many countries, lists are published as the "Top Places to Work" and these can provide insight. The other is to check job board sites like Indeed or Glassdoor and see the reviews left there (also a good place to research interview process and questions asked). Caveat is that job boards may have disgruntled applicants or employees so you have to reach and decipher carefully. Otherwise, I find the other comments hear will give you some great ways to research as well.

In my experience you can land the best / ideal job in the world , however if the corporate culture is 'a misfit' with your values and way of being in the world, then the best job in the world can feel like being locked up in goal. Being in a straight-jacket diminishes our ability to perform and undermines our senses to the lowest denominator - merely to survive, or less. Working in the right place is all about fit. Knowing how to thrive, and what it takes to be in this mode is essential when deciding on a role change. Do your due diligence. Ask more questions. Seek out information and stories. Listen with intent. Reflect. Review. Allow your heart not your head to inform your decision.

One thing I've found helpful is to write a list including the the best 5 jobs / projects I have delivered....ever. For each I detail what happened and why it was such a great experience. I also include a list of proud achievements / outcomes. Then I detail a list of things I learned and cherished from these experiences. I then jot down2 - 3 things could do differently next time. Finally I review my lists and overlay a deep feeling that has emerged within me for each role / project. I then reflect on my musings and use this information to help me focus on what I am seeking out in the future.
