What do you do if your career path towards a promotion is filled with obstacles and challenges?

Beyond the response to "Identify your value proposition or know your strengths," one has to engage in serious introspection about who they are and ask if there are self-doubts that may be blocking them. Socrates said, "To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom." When you know yourself, the attributes and characteristics buttress your skills and achievements towards building the case for your desired position. More than your VP is your "Valued Purpose" [YRD]. Applying this VP positions you to become a VA or valued asset inside the company. It is important to recognize in the society we live in today, human nature competes, and, yes, fights over scarce resources; thus, identifying the lack and filling the gaps with your skills is paramount.

I think every promotion has obstacles, for good reasons. The point of promotion is not just to reward people, but to help them grow in their role. It is very important to prepare them for sustainably work at the next level. At every level of the ladder, I advise to have a document, shared between you and your manager. This document is going to track areas where you excel, and areas that needs improvement. Align these according to your target level. Many companies today offer job level frameworks, so it should be very specific to your organization. Identify areas you're doing well, socialize your achievements. Remember it's not just your manager deciding whether you get a promo or not. I've used this technique at Google/Apple, try it.

In der vertikalen Entwicklung spricht man auch vom Konzept der "Selbstführung".

Every promotion process pretty much involves supporting testimonials. These can be peers you work with, mentors or customers depending on your role. Two things to remember, when you're planning for the promotion, work with all of these potential "peers" to address any gaps you find. Then when it's time, work with them to review your packet. I suggest always including 3 types of feedback: - manager (mandatory, work with your leader) - peers (advise requesting feedback from L+1) - reports (for higher level roles, this is very important) Create a packet that demonstrates your strengths across all next level attributes.

Aber bevor wir direkt loslaufen und nach Feedback fragen, sollten wir uns zuerst folgende Fragen stellen: 👉 Wie offen bin ich wirklich für Feedback? 👉 Von wem suche ich aktiv Feedback und warum? 👉 Wie gehe ich mit widersprüchlichen Perspektiven um? Wir können dadurch die Chance verringern, dem sogenannten "Confirmation Bias" zu verfallen, also der Neigung, Feedback und Informationen so auszuwählen, dass sie die eigenen Erwartungen bestätigen.

This is the most important part where manager and your mentor will play the most significant roles. If you're tracking your progress in a document, identify how do you close these gaps. For me, once it was my communication, especially verbal. My leader suggested me to read more books, join toastmaster or similar things. The more actionable feedback you can get, the better. Set a target date and continuously gather feedback to monitor progress. This will get reflected in your work as well. Keep asking how am I doing in your 1:1s, this will send a signal that you're invested in your growth!

Integratives Denken kann uns dabei helfen, scheinbar gegensätzliche Ziele wie "kurzfristig" und "langfristig" gedanklich zu halten und eine Lösung zu finden, die die Vorteile beider Seiten vereint.

Coragem, vontade e perseverança: três palavras-chave que podem fazer a diferença ao enfrentarmos os desafios da jornada. Coragem para dar o primeiro passo, depois o segundo, e seguir adiante. Vontade de aprender e reaprender (sempre). E, finalmente, perseverança para não se deixar abalar pelos obstáculos. Que, em momento cruciais de oportunidades na carreiras, todos possam ter a coragem, vontade e perseverança de dizerem sim, mesmo sem as melhores condições possíveis.

Muitas vezes nos deparamos com biografias incríveis e podemos pensar se conseguimos “ser como aquelas pessoas” fantásticas. Se formos mulheres então, as dúvidas e questionamentos podem surgir com bem mais frequência do que gostaríamos. Então digo que: não é uma questão de simplesmente buscar os maiores e melhores exemplos e replicar o que já fizeram. É necessário, antes de tudo, saber quem somos e o poder da nossa história! Celebrando nossas conquistas e valorizando nossa caminhada.

Challenges and obstacles and our success over them builds our skills, tests our mettle and develops our leadership and at the cusp of support and challenge we grow - developing skills is vital so look forward to the challenges - go in with a positive and generous spirit and it will create anew you
