What do you do if your fundraising efforts are hindered by misconceptions about delegation?

Through my progressive professional experience, having both been a subordinate and a team head, I have seen the highs and lows of a 'delegation', or 'management' of jobs and responsibilities. While planning, delegating, trusting and empowering colleagues/team members is key, it is equally vital to be CLEAR on who's doing what, support and enquire regularly (NOT micro-manage), encourage greater team cohesion and support, and finally, to call upon regular group meetings to discuss progress and/or challenges. A well-accounted team means greater self-accountability, and thus, better efficiency and success. As cliched as it may sound, I know and have seen many a team doing this regularly.

Address concerns like the fear of being seen as a bad leader who can't handle everything themselves. Explain that delegation allows you to focus on strategic initiatives while your team members leverage their strengths in specific areas. Clear communication and defined goals ensure everyone remains aligned. Another myth is the idea of a lone fundraising hero. Combat this by emphasising how delegation allows you to tap into the diverse strengths of your team. Share past successes that led to increased outreach or engagement. Finally, address trust issues by delegating strategically and considering individual strengths and interests. Provide clear instructions and ongoing support, and celebrate successes.

I think delegation is a key of strong leadership. It is both allowing your team to grow in the work and helping to steer the work to the mission of the organization. You CANNOT do it alone and without effective delegation there is no point in having a team. With no team, there is no reason for leadership.
