What do you do if your informational interview isn't yielding the desired results?

Not gonna lie... if informational interviews don't yield much - this isn't the company you are looking for. On the flip side, you should already know what you need to know about the company. JOB wise - well... you need to know as much as possible before you even apply. Informational interviews- I'm not a fan to be quite honest... if you can't get what you need from the start, move on. This is unlikely to be the company you want to work for.

If an informational interview isn't yielding desired results, consider adjusting your approach, asking more targeted questions, seeking additional contacts, or exploring alternative networking avenues.

To further enhance your preparation for an informational interview, practice your questions with a friend or mentor to refine your delivery and ensure clarity. This rehearsal can help you adjust your phrasing and timing, making your actual conversation flow more naturally. Additionally, consider the sequence of your questions to build a logical and engaging narrative. Start with broader questions about the industry and the company, then gradually move to more specific questions about the interviewee’s role and experiences. This structured approach not only keeps the conversation focused but also helps you uncover valuable insights.

In my experience, informational interviews themselves can be a great opportunity to help expand your network. I always suggest asking the person you're speaking to if there are 2-3 other people they can introduce you to e.g. in the particular technical field, industry, company of interest to you. It's quite possible they may know someone, or know someone who knows someone. You also have nothing to lose by asking, and it can go a long way in connecting you with the right people!

A great way to structure the conversation is to use a why, what, how, next steps approach to help you identify what to say and ask. For instance, ask yourself: Why do I want this conversation, and why did I choose this person specifically? (This creates your intro comments). What is it you want to gain from the conversation? (Helps you to focus on what answers you are seeking). How can you ensure you are well prepared for work in this area? (Elicits clear advice) What are the next steps I should take (helps to ensure you have a clear plan to move forward). Good luck!
