Though creativity is a good thing in interpretation, one can be just as creative as their limits. I would not recommend adding personality or humor to your interpretation as an interpreter is almost like a ghost: everyone can feel your presence, but you are not there. A good interpreter is impartial, unbiased, and is limited to the task at hand. The creativity required for the job is to find a proper match to the source language, while preserving accuracy and transferring the meaning. Mind, that it doesn't mean to be verbatim, unless it is a requirement, i.e. in a courtroom. An interpreter should not just be curious, he or she should be The Curiosity. No matter how many years of experience one has under their belt, the learning never ends.
