What do you do if your leadership skills need improvement?

Self-awareness is the cornerstone of great leadership. Embracing tools like feedback surveys and 360-degree reviews not only illuminates your path to growth but also fosters a culture of transparency and continuous improvement.

I think leaders should be brave enough to do a 360 degree evaluation. Hearing candid feedback from colleagues, supervisors, and subordinates on your character, communication, and overall management style will help you transition from a management mentally to a leadership mentally, which are 2 very different things.

If a leader needs skills improvement; create an Individual development plan once you have used this tool you can share it with your leader and request feedback if it aligns with the company goals, You can also work on your own Stop, start, continue, think about what you believe is working, what needs to be readjusted and what must go on. Find support through a leadership coach, someone who can support you through out your growth process.

I’ll never forget seeing my team turnover rate climb to above 40%. I knew there was a big problem, I just didn’t know what the problem was. I approached the HR leader and asked her to compile all feedback she had received from my team members. The three page, single spaced paper I received stopped me in my tracks. The feedback was unanimous: I was the problem. Self-awareness is the critical accelerant for leaders. When we learn new information about our blind spots, limitations and weaknesses, we can work to do something about them. It took me years of dedication to right the ship, but did I ever. My team went onto have the lowest turnover. Why? Because I sought answers and worked tirelessly to improve my own alienating behavior.

SWOT plays a critical role here. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. It's a strategic planning tool used to identify and analyze the internal strengths and weaknesses of a business or individual, as well as external opportunities and threats in the market or environment. SWOT analysis helps in formulating strategies to maximize strengths, minimize weaknesses, capitalize on opportunities, and mitigate threats.

SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. They provide clarity, focus, and motivation, enhancing productivity and success. By setting SMART goals, individuals and businesses can track progress, stay accountable, and achieve meaningful outcomes efficiently.

Muchas veces lo que los líderes enfrentan es el desconocimiento de cuáles habilidades deben desarrollar una vez que conocen sus oportunidades de mejora. En este sentido, sugiero conversar con líderes más experimentados para ver en qué competencias se han desarrollado. Incluso también podría servir buscar programas de capacitación en liderazgo empresarial para ver qué temáticas contienen y ser fuente de inspiración para entrenamientos ya sea formales en instituciones dedicadas a tal fin, o incluso con Coaches Organizacionales profesionales.

360-degree feedback is very important for identifying blind spots to improve or develop. In addition to requesting feedback from your leaders, colleagues, and collaborators, you can also ask for feedback from key clients and suppliers, and any other stakeholders who are relevant to your role as a leader.

When coaching leaders one of the topics we discuss is how to tap into their stakeholder network where they can receive valuable feedback to fuel their growth. Establish your own Board of Directors that you can meet with to gain insight into possible blindspots in your leadership skills. In addition, make sure to build time into your schedule consistently to follow up with them after you have dedicated time to enhance your skills in specific areas. By using your stakeholder network it will give you open and objective commentary on where and how you can improve as a leader. A key is not to make this a "one and done" conversation as following up will ignite support for your growth and development while creating ambassadors for your work.

Having a trusted advisor is helpful when seeking to improve any aspect of your leadership. Whether it be a peer, formal mentor or hired coach, sharing the journey with others offers varied perspectives. Yes, self-awareness is important, as is taking the time to uncover the gaps. It’s then you can dig into doing the work. I value the opportunity working with my clients on their development journey.

Over my 27+ years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from some good leaders. I took careful notice of the traits and practices that made them successful. As I grew in my own responsibilities, I started to understand my own strengths and naturally shaped my style to reflect the best of what I observed along the way. It takes ongoing reflection to understand what works best and what may need adjusting. Perhaps the greatest thing I learned is that everyone you have to lead or engage with is different and you, as the leader, have a lot of the burden to adjust (i.e., Situational Leadership).

En el liderazgo, menos teoría y más práctica, los ejemplos valen más que mil palabras

Remember you will never be "100%" ready to be a leader. 🌱 You can put in the work and have all the knowledge but nothing can prepare you until you start actually leading. The key is to have the courage to put yourself forward for leadership opportunities and embrace that it is a journey of ups and downs, learning and growth.

Regularly assess your leadership approach, reflect on what's working well and what needs improvement, and be willing to make adjustments accordingly to continuously grow and develop as a leader.

Muchas veces me preguntaba por qué pocas personas logran ser consecuentes y perseverantes y alcanzar sus metas. Aparte de los libros, cursos, seminarios y clases, yo sentía que había algo más alla que frenaba ese empujón motivacional que se lograba sobre todo después de un seminario. Al tiempo descubrí la clave en la Neurociencia, creo hay que profundizar en este tema porque justamente se da respuestas biológicas a comportamientos humanos.

In my role as a leader, I always ask the direct question during 1-on-1 meetings with my team: "How can I better serve you as a leader?" In that listening, I identify how I should specifically improve for each collaborator. Because in addition to developing critical leadership skills, each person also needs to be led differently.

Modern leadership is deeply rooted in the various skills and abilities of emotional intelligence. Teams and individuals are seeking support, relationships and connection. When these represent the foundation of a leader's value system, teams flourish, productivity soars and collaboration is rooted in psychological safety. Leaders simply must embrace EQ.
