What do you do if your mentee is more experienced than you?

If you find your mentee is more experienced than you, see it as a unique opportunity for mutual growth. Embrace a collaborative approach to mentorship, where both mentor and mentee share and learn from each other's expertise. Remember, "In teaching, we learn," highlighting the reciprocal nature of knowledge sharing in any mentor-mentee relationship.

This is actually a joyful situation. When someone doesn’t need the mentor anymore it means the mentor has finished their job. A mentor’s or a coaches job is to accompany the client or mentee for a period of time to achieve a defined goal or state. A sure sign that the goal or state has been reached is when the client/mentee has a similar knowledge, wisdom or even experience than the mentor or coach. If the mentee is more advanced than the mentor from the beginning, I doubt that a mentor/mentee relationship will happen in the first place.

If your mentee has more experience than you, consider the skillsets they're hoping to grow with mentoring. Most mentees aren't seeking better technical skills, they're seeking support on their soft skills and relationships. Remember that there was a reason you were selected or paired and focus on your listening skills and the value you can deliver to your mentee.

One thing I've found particularly helpful is to realize that while your mentee may have more experience than you by way of number of years of experience, it does not necessarily mean they know everything about everything:) The fact that they have opted for mentoring is evidence of the fact that they still need guidance on some aspects of their role/ lives. Understanding their goals or the 'Why' of your mentee, can help you align to what expertise and skills you bring that can help add value to them.

Spark a vibrant exchange of ideas by encouraging your mentee to share their wisdom. Listen actively, soaking up new perspectives. This dialogue isn't just talk; it's a bridge to mutual enlightenment and a testament to the strength of collaborative learning.

Listening attentively is crucial: Attentively listen to their experiences and challenges. This lets you pinpoint areas where your coaching can provide the greatest value. Pose Thought-Provoking Questions: Instead of providing direct answers, encourage individuals to be introspective, consider different options, and uncover their solutions. This empowers individuals to take ownership of their personal and professional development.

It is important to acknowledge and respect the mentee’s experience and knowledge. This will help to build trust and respect during productive mentorship. Mentee may have more experience but there may be areas where they will need help. First identify those areas where you can offer guidance. Setting clear objectives involve aligning mentorship goal with mentee’s objective. Start with discussion to understand mentee’s goal and work together to set clear, measurable objective that help mentee’s growth. It is critical to have regular discussion and revisit objectives to ensure they are aligned with the mentee’s changing needs.

Craft a roadmap together, pinpointing the growth zones and hurdles in their journey. Your guidance lights the path, focusing on their ambitions rather than the experience tally. This collaborative goal-setting carves a pathway for shared advancement, highlighting the essence of mentorship.

Shared Goals: Work with your mentee to establish well-defined objectives for the coaching partnership. These goals should utilise their expertise while aligning with their ambitions for advancement. Emphasise Skill Development: Even those with ample experience can reap rewards by refining abilities such as effective communication, strong leadership, or adept problem-solving. Direct your coaching towards the specific areas where you can assist individuals in further enhancing their skills.

The beauty of mentorship is that often it is a reciprocal relationship. Both mentee and mentor learn and grow together. In the case where the mentee may have more experience or domain expertise in a specific area, open up to learning from them. Especially if it is an area that you as the mentor may need to understand. There is always something you can give or share with your mentee and a mentor can often have many roles beyond teacher. The connector role example given here is an excellent idea to give back to the mentee, through introductions and referrals. Also sharing other guidance based on the mentor's knowledge and life/work experience will always be beneficial to the mentee.

When your mentee's expertise overshadows yours, turn to your network. Introduce them to allies who can propel their progress, showing that your mentorship is not just advice but a gateway to broader horizons and opportunities.

Ask yourself what you can learn from them too... but also, what might happen if you flagged your concern to them? Ask them to reflect on what they are looking for from a Mentor, and how they think you can support them.

The question above does not tell you in what area they have more experience. The role of a mentor is to encourage reflection to help individuals deepen their understanding, gain insights from experiences, and identify areas for improvement. Pose open-ended questions that prompt your mentee to reflect on their experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Create dedicated time and a safe space for reflection during your mentorship meetings. Allow your mentee to express themselves without interruptions or judgment. Most people are forward-focused and often do not take time to review past experiences. Challenge your mentee to think critically about their experiences, assumptions, and beliefs.

Be flexible and adaptable in your mentoring approach to meet the unique needs and preferences of your mentee. Adjust your communication style, mentoring techniques, and feedback methods as necessary to effectively support their development. Share examples of adapting your mentoring style to accommodate different personalities and learning styles.

Propel your mentee towards introspection, guiding them through their past to uncover nuggets of wisdom. Your role is to kindle the spark of self-examination, fostering a journey of personal growth and enlightenment that enriches their professional path.

Reflect on these and the answers shall emerge: 1. What is the assumption that you have while processing this thought that your Mentee is more experienced than you? 2. What ingredients do you have to be an apt mentor for your mentee?
