If you feel like your public speaking could use some work, don't stress! First, figure out where you might need the most help – is it nerves, unclear messaging, or maybe just getting the audience interested? Consider taking a course focused on executives or even getting a speaking coach for personalized tips. Practice is key – rehearse out loud, record yourself, and get used to the sound of your own voice delivering your message. Don't be afraid to use stories, visuals, and even a little humor to connect with your audience. Ask for honest feedback from trusted colleagues, and remember, it takes time to become a truly engaging speaker, so keep at it!

The key to getting feedback is to get it from someone who is a better presenter than you. It can be very beneficial to receive constructive criticism from family and friends, but their advice may be more general or generic. Instead, look for someone who is a better public speaker than you (colleague, mentor, coach, etc.) to get an insider's view on ways to improve. There are also several courses online designed to improve public speaking that may be useful.

The most challenging thing about improving your public speaking for a busy executive is getting started. There are a million things to do, and doing something that pushes you out of your comfort zone, is often one of the first things to avoid or delay. So first step is to book in a presentation skills workshop or a coach. I personally recommend joining a one or two day immersive program where you can receive training on the message (structuring what to say for impact) and the method - how body language, delivery and additional persuasic techniques make a difference. Then once you've done the program, then book into times to practise your presentations.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by how much you need to do to improve, focus on one thing. Even a small change (like removing filler words) can make a big difference in the quality of your presentation. So if you lack the time, energy, or mental space to work on multiple things, just focus on one to start.

When it comes to presenting, think of it more like a craft. A craft is something that is enhanced and cultivated and shaped over time - by learning techniques from programs, by observing the methods of other people, and importantly by doing it! So then, who will be intentionally observing for ways to improve?? Attending conferences to see professional speakers, watching TED talks and seeking out leaders within your organisation who are proficient to learn from.

In addition to the top speakers in your field, look online. With the amount of people using social media platforms, you can find unconventional accounts that are amazing at communicating on camera. Observe them and see what you can take for your own presentation.

Improving your public speaking skills as an executive is like refining your performance on a grand stage. Think of yourself as the lead actor in a blockbuster movie—you want to captivate your audience from start to finish. Begin by fine-tuning your script, ensuring your message is clear and engaging. Rehearse your lines until they flow effortlessly, like a seasoned performer delivering a memorable monologue. Embrace the spotlight and command the stage with confidence, using gestures and facial expressions to enhance your delivery.

One way to prepare your presentation is to imagine you were an audience member. What would make you lose interest? What would actually keep you engaged? If you're presenting on zoom - don't read from a script... because an audience on zoom will likely start opening other tabs. If you're presenting to a room of under 20 people, don't be so stiff and formal that they feel disconnected from you. If you were attending your own presentation, what would you want to see?

Accepting that you get nervous and are afraid of making mistakes is the first step to improve. 1. Remember that even best speakers could feel nervous, they too could make mistakes; however, they don't allow these feelings to take over, they manage their emotions effectively 2. Start analyzing what makes you nervous and what are your common mistakes; work on managing them, avoiding them, and eliminating them 3. Practice before a group of people, and ask for feedback; record your session, note the instances where you experienced nervousness or made mistakes; resolve these issues 4. Stay calm, stay focused, give it your best, and remember that you'll get better with time 5. Speak freely, connect with the audience, and communicate effectively

When practicing, learn to freestyle your presentation if needed. That way, if you blank during the actual event, you won't defer to reading your notes the entire time. When creating your presentation, include specific bullet points or images that will anchor in your ideas, so that if you need to, the point or image will remind you of what you wanted to say.

Practice, practice, practice. Practice alone, with an observer, on video. Practice silently and out loud. Start from a different part each time, to even out the repetition. Practice with different subject matter and different audiences. Practice until it feels natural, inside and out.
