My advice would be to stay curious, ask questions, and seek out opportunities to learn and grow. Don't be afraid to make mistakes - they're a natural part of the learning process. Find a mentor or someone in the industry who can offer guidance and support. And most importantly, believe in yourself and your abilities. With hard work and determination, you'll overcome any challenge that comes your way.

When I was starting my career in PR - someone wise told me: Go to corporate for the money; go to government for the stability; and go to agency for the knowledge and experience. And so, my advice would be to start at an agency where you can work on a variety of clients and learn about yourself - what you like; what you don't like; what industries you think present opportunities; what industries are not quite as lucrative; etc. Then, you can find your niche.

Without being too pushy, try to be part of as many different projects with as many different people as you can. Even if all you do is a lot of watching and small "grunt work" tasks, you'll learn much more by being part of various public relations tasks than you will reading about them in a class textbook or hearing someone talk about them. I was fortunate, early in my PR career, to have managers who involved me in a lot of their work. And as a bonus, by meeting others, you'll begin to build a professional network that will hopefully pay dividends for you for years to come.

I speak from personal experience - if you act calmly during a crisis (especially as a junior person) and just do what you're supposed to / been assigned to do (focusing on the task; not the big picture stakes), you will have developed a reputation as someone who can be trusted during a crisis. That will go a long way to ensuring you get the best projects, the interesting teams, the high-value assignments.

Since the beginning of my career I have been exposed to crisis situations that have taught me a lot about ways to control common anxiety at this stage and how to prepare myself in the best way to deal with unexpected scenarios. It is essential to understand that at this initial stage of your career, there is no autonomy in decision-making and that every movement must be accompanied by a mentor.

Find a mentor - It's important to identify someone with experience who you can rely on to get you over the rough spots until your feet are planted more firmly on ground. Develop your skills daily - What are you doing every day to develop and fine tune your skills? Read a book about your industry from someone well established in the field. Start a post on LinkedIn to engage others in an area of interest you are really passionate about. Reach out to someone in the field and ask if they would be willing to speak to you about something you want to learn more about. You would be surprised at how many would be willing to help. Practice your communication skills - Write a letter to the editor to try to get published, or join Toastmaster's Intnatl.

Embrace all the work you do, even the work that seems mundane, overwhelming, or rough on your self-esteem. There are valuable lessons to be learned in pretty much everything, especially when you're starting out. Earlier in my career, my employer launched a new business venture that, for various reasons, was one crisis after another for more than 2 years. But as unpleasant as it was, I learned a lot about not only crisis management, but nitty gritty operations in my employer's industry. Years later, I am still applying these lessons learned.

This is more of a preemptive step: build your very own circle of helpers. When you're starting out in PR, most challenges come from the lack of experience and the consequential ambiguity in solving for them. Your challenges will be diverse, requiring insights from someone at a specific level and field of the job, so invest in relationships with people across the chain. While most bosses want to seem approachable, what they appreciate more is self-reliance - you taking the effort to figure out solutions yourself. This is where your circle of helpers will come in handy. Also, know that this is a "circle" for a reason. What comes around must go around.

One of my favorite ways to learn and teach is from workshopping media pitches and research side-by-side. Listen to each other's calls. Ask to sit it and/or go at it together - even for 20 minutes - and learn through osmosis.
